Juniata 2, Thiel 1

Altoona, Pa. ? The Juniata College women?s soccer team first victory of the season came in dramatic fashion as Sarah Lester (Thomas Jefferson/Jefferson Hills) scored an unassisted goal with just three seconds left to give the Eagles a 2-1 win over Thiel College in the consolation match of the Penn State-Altoona Challenge Cup Sunday morning. Juniata is now 1-3-1 on the season, while Thiel fell to 0-4 on the year.

Lester?s goal capped a dominating Juniata effort as the Eagles out-shot Thiel 24-4 on the match. Yet neither team was able to punch through with a goal in the first 45 minutes.

It was not until the 57th minute that Thiel broke through and put Juniata in a 1-0 hole. Kendiace Gibson scored an unassisted tally at the 56:42 mark, beating Juniata keeper Lisa Russo (Lakeland/Haskell, N.J.) for the first goal of the game.

Ruso would record four saves in the match as she kept Juniata in position to strike back. And strike back they did as Lindsey Garvey (Willsboro Central/Essex, N.Y) scored her first goal of the season off an assist from Rebecca Shoaf (Madison/Madison, N.J.). The goal came in the 70th minute and set-up Lester?s dramatics.

Thiel goalie Ashleigh Dunsmore recorded eight saves in the match.

Juniata will play at Mount Aloysius on Thursday.
