Widener 6, Juniata 2

Huntingdon, Pa. ? Five first-half goals were too much for the Juniata women?s soccer team to overcome as the Eagles fell in their conference opener 6-2 against Widener in Huntingdon Sunday afternoon. Juniata?s record falls to 2-4-1 and 0-1 in the conference, while the Pioneers are now 3-1-2 overall and 1-0 in conference play.

The Pioneers jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with goals from Laura Hughes and Erin Livingston with Melanie Miller earning a pair of assists. The second goal came in the 19th minute, as the visitors got up early.

Juniata then responded as a foul in the box gave the Eagles a penalty kick just a minute later. Nikki McLellan (Parkland/Hanover) converted the penalty to cut the lead in half. Then ten minutes later McLellan added a second tally off an assist from Lindsay Garvey (Willsboro Central/Essex, N.Y.) to tie the score at two.

That would be as close as the Eagles would get as Janine Rogers beat Juniata keeper Lisa Ruso (Lakeland/Haskell, N.J.) for the third goal of the half at 34:17 mark. Lauren Davidson assisted on the goal, and then promptly scored two goals herself in the final seven minutes of the half to give Widener a 5-2 halftime advantage. Susan Kline assisted on Davidson?s second tally.

Widener then capped the scoring in the 65th minute of the second half with an unassisted goal from Megan Donato.

Juniata finished the match with five shots, forcing Widener goalie Kelli Quinn to make one save. Quinn made one save while playing 69 minutes in goal before being relieved by Betsy Shoutsal who made one save in the final 21 minutes.

Ruso finished with eight saves in the match as Widener attacked the goal with 29 shots.

Juniata returns to action on Wednesday when the Eagles host non-conference foe Lycoming.
