Juniata 5, Widener 4

Chester, Pa.? It took until the final match of the season, but the Juniata College women?s tennis team earned a victory with a hard-fought 5-4 win over Widener University in Chester Saturday afternoon. The Eagle women wrap up the team portion of the season with a record of 1-9 and 1-6 in Commonwealth Conference play. Widener finishes its season 1-11 overall and 0-7 in conference play.

It was a big day for sophomore Megan Carpenter (Huntingdon/Huntingdon). Competing at the number-six singles position with the match tied 4-4, Carpenter rallied from a one-set deficit to earn a 5-7, 7-5, 6-3 win to secure the team victory for Juniata. She also earned a doubles victory on the day, teaming with partner Molly Coursey (Westminster/Hanover) to claim an 8-1 win at the third doubles position. Jenny Liu (Pennsville Memorial/Deep Water, N.J.) and Elizabeth Cooney (Forest Hills/South Fork) also claimed a point on the doubles court at the second doubles position. The duo earned a point with an 8-4 victory in their doubles match.

Juniata got two other singles wins to go along with Carpenter?s triumph. Jenna Taylor (Pequea Valley/Narvon) posted a 6-2, 6-0 win at fourth singles, and Anita Desai (Cumberland Valley/Mechanicsburg) notched a singles win at the fifth spot. Desai?s victory came with by a 6-1, 6-1 score.

Cooney won the first set at her second singles match before falling 2-6, 6-3, 6-4. Coursey and Liu fell by scores of 6-2, 6-3 and 6-4, 6-0 at first and third singles respectively.

Desai ends the season with the best singles record on the Eagles squad, as she finished the year with a 3-6 mark in singles competition.
