Moravian 71, Juniata 45

Bethlehem, PA. ? Playing without its leading scorer the Juniata College women?s basketball team hung with conference leader Moravian for a half before a 44-point second half from the home team sent the Eagles to a 71-45 set-back in Bethlehem Saturday afternoon. Juniata is now 5-15 on the year and 1-9 in the conference, while Moravian upped its record to 17-3 overall and 8-1 in the Commonwealth.

The game was a defensive struggle in the first 20 minutes as the two teams combined to shoot 17-of-60 from the field. Moravian opened the game on an 8-0 run before Jill Walsh (Ferndale/Johnstown) put Juniata on the board at the 15:42 mark. Juniata would keep the margin in single digits throughout the half, and then closed the half on a 6-1 run to close within four at the half.

The second half then belonged to the home team as the Greyhounds limited Juniata to six field goals in the final 20 minutes. Moravian meanwhile shot 39-percent from the field and hit 10-of-13 free throws en route to its 44-point second half.

The lead got away from Juniata quickly as Moravian opened the second half on a 15-4 run over the first five minutes of the half. The lead remained in double figures throughout the half, as Juniata couldn?t get the offense on track to make a run at the Greyhounds.

Courtney Callas (Freeport/Sarver) scored a team-high 10 points for Juniata. Lesley Snoby (Johnstown/Johnstown) added eight points and eight rebounds. Katie O?Brien (South Western/Hanover) pulled in a team-high nine rebounds for the Eagles, with Mindy Werner (West York/York) finishing with a team-best three assists.
