HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- The politics of sustainability -- that is, the principle of maintaining natural resources, economies and other resources so that future generations can continue to use them -- will be discussed by David Bell, director of the York Centre for Applied Sustainability, at 8:15 p.m., Sept. 24, in Alumni Hall in the Brumbaugh Science Center on the Juniata College campus.

The event is free and open to the public. The program is sponsored by the Baker Institute for Peace and Conflict Studies.

Bell's talk, "Sustainability and the Implications for Peace and Security," will outline the changes in political practices, policies, institutions and culture that will be necessary to support sustainability into the 21st century.

Bell also is a professor in the faculty of environmental studies of York University in Toronto, Ontario in Canada. He founded the York Centre for Applied Sustainability, housed at York University, in 1996, and served as dean of York University's Faculty of Environmental Studies from 1992 to 1996. He also served as dean of the Faculty of Graduate Studies from 1981 to 1987.

Bell earned a doctorate from Harvard University in 1969. He also wrote and hosted a series of 12 one-hour radio broadcasts on sustainability in 1998 for the Open College radio network in Toronto. He has served as a consultant on sustainability issues in Canada and in several other countries.
