Juniata 3, Messiah 0

Grantham, Pa. ? The Juniata College women?s volleyball team kept its momentum going as the Eagles stormed past Messiah College 3-0 in Commonwealth action in Grantham Wednesday evening. The win was the 19th-straight for Juniata and improved the Eagles to 24-1 overall and 5-0 in conference action. The Falcons fell to 10-14 on the season and now have a 1-5 Commonwealth mark.

With several match-ups against nationally ranked opponents coming this weekend, Juniata looked sharp as the Eagles earned the victory by game scores of 30-15, 30-19, 30-7.

Middle hitters Katie Laucks (West York/York) and Stephanie Kines (Towson/Towson, Md.) were big factors offensively and defensively in the match. Laucks produced a team-high nine kills along with four blocks, while Kines finished with seven kills and paced the team with five blocks.

Brittany Carr (Titusville/Titusville), Amber Thomas (Conestoga Valley/Ephrata) and Rachael Schatz (West Perry/Elliotsburg) all finished with six kills to balance out the Juniata offense.

Sophomore Tara McMinn (Huntingdon/Huntingdon) controlled Juniata?s back-row defense with 17 digs. Setter Jessica Ritchey (Greencastle-Antrim/Greencastle) added eight digs and Kelly Popernik (Bartlett/Bartlett, Ill.) chipped in seven.

McMinn also provided four serve aces in the match, a total that was matched by Abby Leonard (Shade/Johnstown).

Juniata hosts its lone home tournament of the season this weekend, and will begin play with a 4 pm match against Franklin & Marshall. The Eagles will also take on nationally-ranked New York and Eastern during the two-day tournament.
