BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- The Juniata College men's track team is in third place while the women are fourth following the first day of competition at the 2008 Landmark Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships, Saturday at Moravian College in Bethlehem, Pa.

The men's team has 62 points, behind Moravian with 98 and Susquehanna with 93.5.
In the women's championship, the Eagles have 31 points, trailing Moravian (109.5), Susquehanna (101), and Catholic (41).

Senior Eric Hoover (Wilmington, Del./Brandywine) set a new Juniata school record in the 1500m, finishing second with a time of 4:02.63. Teammate Tripp Rudolph (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) was third in the event with a time of 4:04.97.

Matt Booth (Allentown, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic) also set a new school record in the long jump, with his second-place effort of 23-1 ¾. He eclipsed the previous mark of 23-1 - a record that had stood for 54 years, since being set by Gene Rothenberger back in 1954.

Other top finishes for the men included Sam Williams (Roaring Spring, Pa./Central-Martinsburg) and Matt Bailey (East Petersburg, Pa./Hempfield-Landisville), who were second and third respectively in the 10,000m with times of 33:24.90 and 33:51.35; Ryan Baird (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin), who was third in the pole vault (13-3 ½); and Ryan Johnson (Mountaintop, Pa./Crestwood), who was fourth in the javelin (161-3).

On the women's side, Stephanie Varner (Huntingdon, Pa./Huntingdon) was the lone record setter with her fourth place finish in the pole vault, after clearing a height of 10-2.

Kelsey Buffenmyer (Mount Joy, Pa./Donegal) was the only Juniata competitor to finish first for either the men or women during first day competition at the Landmark meet, as she won the high jump after clearing the height of 5-1 ¾. Buffenmyer also placed third in the long jump with a jump of 17-7 ½.

Competition concludes on Sunday, April 27, at the Timothy Bridegam Track and Rocco Calvo Field in Bethlehem with the track event finals and the triple jump and hammer throw.
