MEN'S VOLLEYBALL (5-7, 3-5 EIVA Tait): Mar 15, NJIT; Mar. 16, Rutgers-Newark; Mar. 17, New Paltz.
Juniata was not in action this past week, but will return to the court this coming Friday at home against New Jersey Institute of Technology to begin a three-match weekend stint at home. The Eagles are ranked third in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division III Poll.

MEN'S INDOOR TRACK & FIELD: season complete.
Junior Dusty Lehr (Bermudian Springs/New Oxford) became the first-ever Juniata track and field athlete to compete in the NCAA Division III indoor championship over the weekend. He qualified to participate in the 55-meter high hurdles. His time of 7.86 in the trials on Friday was not good enough to advance him into the finals on Saturday afternoon.

SOFTBALL (2-2): Mar. 12, Alvernia (2); Mar. 16 at Widener (2).
The Eagles traveled to the Virginia Wesleyan East vs. Atlantic Challenge on Friday and Saturday to open the 2002 season. Juniata returned home with a 2-2 record after losing two on the first day and then coming back to win twice on the second day of competition. On Friday, the Eagles dropped a pair of close outings, including 7-5 to Chowan to start the day, and 4-3 to host Virginia Wesleyan in the afternoon. In the season starter, Chowan struck for six runs during the first three innings of play, but the Eagles came back with five runs in the top of the fourth to get back into the contest. Junior center fielder Pam Michael (Baldwin/Pittsburgh) finished the game 2 for 3 with one run scored and three RBI. Senior shortstop Brandy Preslovich (Bald Eagle Area/Moshannon) was 2 for 3 and knocked in a run, while sophomore left fielder Amy Gable (Kennard-Dale/Stewartstown) was 2 for 5 and scored once and freshman Allison D'Ambrosia (State College/Boalsburg) was 2 for 4. In the second game of the day, Gable was the hard-luck loser for the Eagles. She went the distance and gave up just two earned runs and seven hits. She was also 2 for 4, including a double, offensively, and she scored a run. Junior first baseman Becky Herr (Hamburg/Hamburg) was 2 for 2 with two RBI. On Saturday, the Eagles defeated Christopher Newport, 8-7. Juniata scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to pull out the victory. Sophomore catcher Sarah Patterson (Danville/Danville) was 2 for 4, including a double, with two RBI. Preslovich was 1 for 4 with a home run. She scored one run and knocked one. Sophomore Jean Silvey (Red Lion/Airville) was 1 for 3 and scored twice. Freshman Emily Martin (Coxsackie-Athens/Coxsackie, NY) started on the mound and went 4.1 innings but did not figure in the decision. Gable tossed the final 2.2 innings and got the win. She gave up just one hit, one earned run and struck out one. Juniata closed the week with a 9-1 win over Randolph-Macon in five innings (due to the eight-run rule). Gable was 3 for 3 with two runs scored, one RBI and one stolen base. Silvey went 2 for 3, scored once and knocked in a run. She had a double and a stolen base as well. Senior Christie Matthews (South Williamsport/South Williamsport) got the win on the mound. She went the distance, gave up seven hits, one earned run and struck out three without allowing a walk.

BASEBALL (8-6, 2-1 Commonwealth): Mar. 17, Pitt-Bradford.
Juniata went 5-3 during its annual Sarasota Spring Classic tournament during the past week. The Eagles opened the stretch with a split against Moravian. Juniata won the first game, 10-3, but lost the second, 7-3. In the initial tilt, senior second baseman Jamie Campbell (Muncy/Muncy) was 2 for 3 with two runs scored and two RBI, while senior first baseman Tim Dobson (Millville/Millville, NJ) was 2 for 4 with three RBI and two runs scored, including a home run. Senior designated hitter Tim Keeley (Caledonia-Mumford/Caledonia, NY) hit a home run as well and was 2 for 4 with three RBI and a run scored. Freshman right fielder Matt Garner (Bellwood-Antis/Bellwood) went 3 for 3. On the mound, junior Steve Brink (Central Columbia/Nescopeck) went the distance to record his first win of the year. He allowed just two hits, walked four and struck out three, while all three runs against him were earned. In the second game of the day, senior catcher Matt Slagel (Spring Grove/Spring Grove) was 2 for 3 with a double and a run scored. On Tuesday, the Eagles split another pair of outings, beating Bluffton, 11-6, but losing to Eastern Mennonite, 6-5 in nine innings. Against Bluffton, sophomore pitcher Eric Hatten (DuBois Area/DuBois) got the win in relief. He threw five innings, gave up two earned runs and six hits, walked one and struck out one. Slagel was 2 for 2, scored three times, knocked in two runs and had a home run. Keeley was 2 for 4 with one RBI and one run scored, including a home run. Garner had one hit in four at-bats, but it was a three-run home run in the first. Campbell went 2 for 2 and knocked in a run. In the nightcap of the day, Eastern Mennonite was able to come from behind and get past Juniata in a one-run affair. Keeley threw seven innings of five-hit ball, but did not figure in the decision. He struck out four and walked just one. Dobson was 2 for 4 with an RBI and one run scored, while senior center fielder Lucas Kelleher (Bishop Guilfoyle/Altoona) was 2 for 4, scored twice and knocked in one run. Slagel was 1 for 4 with a solo home run. On Wednesday, Juniata came back to defeat Eastern Mennonite, 7-6, after trailing, 5-0, early. Dobson was 2 for 3 with a triple, two runs scored and an RBI. Keeley was 1 for 3 with one run scored and two RBI, including a home run, while Slagel was 1 for 2 with a run scored and two RBI. He also had a home run. Brink threw six innings and got the win. He gave up six hits, three earned runs, walked three and struck out one. Senior pitcher Clint Wevodau (Northern Lebanon/Annville) tossed the final inning and got the save. He allowed one hit, walked one and struck out one. On Thursday, Juniata took to the field twice and posted a split on the day. In the opener, the Eagles lost to Kenyon, 12-4, after jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Garner had a two-run single in the frame to help put Juniata up by three and was 3 for 3 with two RBI in the contest. In the second game of the day, Juniata came back from a 9-3 deficit after one full inning of play to record a 19-11 decision over Bluffton in a slugfest. The two squads combined for 29 runs and 22 hits, but they also totaled six errors together. Juniata trailed, 11-5 after three innings, but grabbed the lead with seven runs on just two hits in the fourth frame. The Eagles also benefited from 14 Bluffton walks and in addition, Bluffton pitchers hit three Juniata batters. Keeley was 3 for 4 with three runs scored and four RBI. He launched his fifth home run of the season to lead off the sixth inning and had a double in the outing. Kelleher was 2 for 3 and scored twice, while sophomore shortstop Marc Frailey (Middletown Area/Middletown) went 2 for 4 with three RBI and a pair of runs scored. Junior Josh Finafrock (Waynesboro/Waynesboro) got his first win of the year as he worked five innings of relief. He allowed just four hits, one run (earned), walked four and struck out seven. He was the third pitcher of the day for the Eagles. On Friday, Juniata ended its week in Sarasota the way that it began its stay ? with a win. The Eagles got a complete-game victory from Wevodau and gave him all of the runs that he would nee through five innings of work during a 5-2 triumph over Kenyon. Wevodau struck out 10 batters on the day, including two straight in the bottom of the seventh inning with the tying run at the plate and no one out. He also scattered seven hits throughout the Kenyon lineup and allowed just two earned runs and two walks. Wevodau is now 3-0 this year with a 2.93 earned-run averge. Juniata was held to just four hits in the game, but benefited from three errors and seven walks allowed by the Profs, who fell to 7-4 with the loss. Kelleher was 1 for 3 with a double and two RBI, while Slagel was 1 for 2 with a home run, three runs scored and one RBI. Slagel and Keeley were both named to the all-tournament team for Juniata. Each tied a tournament record with four home runs and they helped the Eagles tie their own tourney mark of 10 home runs as a team, which was set in 1998.
