Cathleen A. Hewlett of Pittsburgh has been awarded the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship. She is the daughter of Margaret Hewlett of Upper St. Clair and Howard Hewlett. A biology major and junior at Juniata College, Cathleen is a 1999 graduate of Upper St. Clair High School.

Cathleen was selected as one of the hundreds of Goldwater Scholars across the country. Her research proposal seeks to determine the effects of histamine on the olefactory pathways of honeybees. Students are selected for this honor based on academic merit from a field of mathematics, science, and engineering students nominated by the faculties of colleges and universities.

The Goldwater Foundation is a federally endowed agency established by Public Law 99-661 on November 14, 1986. The Scholarship Program honoring Senator Barry M. Goldwater was designed to foster and encourage outstanding students to pursue careers in the fields of mathematics, the natural sciences, and engineering.
