Huntingdon, Pa.-- Juniata College men's soccer was shut out 3-0 in its first Landmark Conference game of the season to U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, Saturday afternoon at Winton Hill Field.

Just nine minutes into the game, Mariners midfielder Ryan Silveira scored off of a corner kick. The match remained 1-0 until late in the first half when Juniata had an own goal off of a defensive deflection in the 37th minute. The Eagles were fighting for every ball but the Mariners still knocked in another goal in the 55th minute as Andrew MacKenzie assisted Dan Twito.

Evan LaTourrette (Stony Brook, N.Y., Ward Melville) had two outstanding shots on net for the Eagles, challenging their keeper and their defense each time. Chad Kohr (Mount Wolf, Pa./Northeastern), Noah Bowers (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) and Jeffrey Gring (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) each had one shot.

The match was both intense and physical, with Juniata recording 11 fouls and Merchant Marine recording 18. Merchant Marine had an advantage in shots with 15 compared to Juniata's eight, and each team had three corner kicks.

Juniata keeper Ezra Cassel (Denver, Pa./Cocalico) was fouled and injured in the first half but pushed through to record five saves and play the rest of the 90 minutes in goal. Gary Poulin defended the net for the Mariners for the full 90 minutes and recorded two saves.

Juniata (5-2) hosts Lycoming College on Tuesday, Sept. 21 scheduled for a 4:30 p.m. start time.
