HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- Juniata College's Department of Music will host Gilmar Goulart, an acclaimed Brazilian percussionist, as he gives an informal percussion workshop at 4 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 1, in Rosenberger Auditorium in the Halbritter Center for the Performing Arts.

The informal workshop is free and open to the public.

Goulart, whose main instrument is the marimba, will perform three pieces during the workshop: "Prelude No. 1 in E Minor," by Ney Rosauro; "For Marimba and Tape," by Martin Wesley-Smith; and "Ghanaia," by Matthias Schmitt.

In addition, Goulart will critique the college's student Percussion Ensemble, discuss his music and the compositions he's playing and answer questions from the students.

Goulart has recorded two albums, "The World of Marimba," (1998), and "The Moods of Marimba" (2008). As a marimbist, Goulart has performed the Brazilian premieres for pieces by such composers as Christopher Deane, James Ure and David Jones.

Currently, Goulart is head of percussion studies at the Federal University of Santa Maria, in Santa Maria, Brazil. Goulart received a doctoral degree in music at the University of Colorado, Boulder and studied at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, England.
