Juniata Orchestra to Perform Dvorak Symphony
(Posted March 26, 2012)
HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- The Juniata College Orchestra will showcase the diverse work of four composers, including a performance of an entire Dvorak symphony at a concert at 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 1, in Rosenberger Auditorium in the Halbritter Center for the Performing Arts on the Juniata campus.
Tickets are $5 for adults and free for those under 18 and Juniata students with a current ID.
The orchestra is directed and conducted by Rebekah O'Brien, lecturer in music at Juniata College.
The concert will begin with "Overture to Abduction from the Seraglio" by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The work was commissioned by Emperor Joseph II, and is based upon the story of two men attempting to rescue their lovers from a Turkish pasha's harem.
Referenced in the movie "Amadeus," the opera showcases the Turkish style that was popular at the time of its composition.
Next, the orchestra will feature piccolo soloist and 2011 Concerto Competition winner Victoria Rehr, a junior from Wernersville, Pa., performing the composition "Concerto for Piccolo and Orchestra" by New York City-based composer Lowell Liebermann.
Before intermission, the orchestra will feature the work of Austrian composer Franz Joseph Haydn in "Symphony No. 45 'Farewell' Presto-Adagio." Haydn is said to be the "father of the symphony." Forced to stay at his patron's home and play music while his wife stayed at home, Haydn hinted at his desire to go home during the final "adagio," hence the 'farewell' in the symphony's title.
After intermission, the orchestra will conclude with AntonÃn Dvo?ák's "Symphony No. 8 in G minor," which is divided into four movements: "Allegro con brio," "Adagio," "Allegretto grazioso," and "Allegro ma non troppo." Dvo?ák is from a small Bohemian village near Prague, and he is known for incorporating Czech folk idioms into his music.
