BASEBALL (17-16-1, 8-6 Commonwealth): May 2, Elizabethtown (Commonwealth Playoffs);

May 4-5, Common wealth Playoffs at West Lawn, Pa.

The Eagles played six games during the past seven days and the week started with a sweep of Division II Indiana (Pa.) at Langdon Field. Juniata won the opener, 5-4. Junior pitcher Tim Keeley (Caledonia-Mumford/Caledonia, NY) went the distance and got the win on the mound. He allowed seven hits, three earned runs and two walks. Offensively, Keeley was 2 for 3 with three RBI, including what turned out to be the game-winning run. Senior left fielder Fred Heaton (Central/Roaring Spring) was 2 for 3 with one run scored and a stolen base. Senior right fielder Lucas Kelleher (Bishop Guilfoyle/Altoona) went 1 for 3, scored twice and had two RBI. In the second contest, the Eagles slugged out a 17-11 victory. Freshman right fielder Bill Kulbacki (DuBois Area/DuBois) was 3 for 3 with two doubles, four RBI and two runs scored. Junior first baseman Tim Dobson (Millville/Millville, NJ) posted a 3 for 4 showing, including a triple, and scored twice while knocking in another. Kelleher was 3 for 5 with a triple, three RBI and three runs scored. Senior center fielder Matt Eisenberg (Big Spring/Newville) went 2 for 5 with three runs scored and two stolen bases. One of his hits was a triple and with that he set the program career record for triples (14) and hits (165). Sophomore pitcher Steve Brink (Central Columbia/Nescopeck) got the victory on the mound, pitching four innings of relief work. On Thursday, Juniata lost both games of a doubleheader at Penn State-Altoona, 5-2 and 9-1. It marked the first time in the history of the series with the Cougars that Penn State-Altoona defeated Juniata. In the opener, Dobson and freshman shortstop Marc Frailey (Middletown Area/Middletown) were both 1 for 3, while junior third baseman Matt Slagel (Spring Grove/Spring Grove) went 1 for 1 with a run scored and he was hit by a pitch. In the second tilt, Kelleher went 1 for 2 and belted the first home run of his career to account for the lone blue and gold run. On Saturday, Juniata swept host Susquehanna in Commonwealth Conference action to clinch a spot in the conference tournament. Other results in Commonwealth during Saturday's play moved the Eagles into second place in the loop and they will now host third-place squad Elizabethtown for a single, nine-inning game on Wednesday. The top four teams in the Commonwealth qualified for the post-season tourney and the winner of the double-elimination bracket receives an automatic berth in the NCAA Division III championship. On Saturday, junior pitcher Clint Wevodau (Northern Lebanon/Annville) tossed a complete-game three hitter to lead the Eagles to a 3-0 win over Susquehanna in the first outing. Wevodau took a no-hitter into the sixth before giving up a two-out double. He struck out two and did not yield a walk for the second straight outing. Junior catcher Matt Bowers (Westminster/Westminster, MD) was 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI. He plated Juniata's first run with a double in the fourth. Kelleher was 2 for 4 with a pair of singles. In the second game, sophomore pitcher Paul Evans (Huntingdon/Huntingdon) threw a complete-game three-hitter as well. He struck out seven and walked none. Eisenberg went 4 for 4 with a double and two runs scored. Kelleher was 2 for 3, scored three times, stole a base and knocked in a run. Frailey was 2 for 4, while Keeley and Dobson were both 1 for 4 with two RBI.

SOFTBALL (12-15-1, 4-10 Commonwealth): season complete.

Juniata closed its season with a pair of losses to defending Commonwealth Conference champion Moravian on Saturday. In the opener, the Eagles were held to four hits during a 7-1 loss. Sophomore left fielder Lauren Baker (Susquehannock/Spring Grove) was 2 for 4 with a double, while freshman right fielder/pitcher Amy Gable (Kennard-Dale/Stewartstown) was 1 for 3 and scored a run. In the second game, Juniata fell, 2-0, and was limited to four hits again. The Eagles ended the year just one win shy of tying the program record for victories in a season (13 - established by the 1986 and 1987 teams), but drastically improved on last spring's 2-20 mark.

MEN'S TRACK & FIELD: May 4-5, MAC Championship at Messiah.

The Eagles started the week with a showing at the Penn Relays on Friday. The Juniata 4x400-meter relay unit placed ninth in a field of 14 with a season's-best time of 3:26.64. On Saturday, the blue and gold unit traveled to the Western Maryland Green Terror Classic and placed third out of eight teams with 85 points. Frostburg State won the team title with 183 markers. Sophomore Dusty Lehr (Bermudian Springs/New Oxford) took first in the pole vault with a clear of 14-1 and he also won the 110-meter high hurdles (15.29). Lehr was fourth in the high jump (6-0). Sophomore Nick Wolfe (McConnellsburg/McConnellsburg) hit the tape first in the 400-meter hurdles (56.44) and was fifth in the 200 meters (23.46). Junior Ashley Mort (Blue Mountain/Orwisburg) placed second in the 100-meter dash (11.27) and third in the 200 meters (22.65). Senior Josh Kline (Bellefonte/Bellefonte) took second in the javelin with his effort of 170-10.

WOMEN'S TRACK & FIELD: May 4-5, MAC Championship at Messiah.

Juniata's 4x400-meter relay squad ran at the annual Penn Relays and placed seventh in a field of 15 with a campaign-best effort of 4:12.26. On Saturday, the Eagles won the Western Maryland Invitational with 138 points. Senior Kristy Wagner (Dover/Dover) placed first in the long jump (15-8 3/4), second in the 400-meter hurdles (1:10.64), second in the triple jump (32'2 3/4) and fifth in the 100-meter hurdles (17.81). Sophomore Melissa Flint (Port Allegany/Port Allegany) won the high jump (5-0), took fifth in the triple jump (30-7 1/4) and long jump (14-0) and was sixth in the 100-meter hurdles (18.44). Freshman Stefanie Rynkewitz (Lewistown/Lewistown) took second in the 400 meters (59.64) and was fifth in the 200-meter dash (26.67). Junior Jessica Sprankle (Tyrone/Tyrone) was third in both the 100- and 400-meter hurdles with times of 17.14 and 1:04.54, respectively. Sophomore Hillary Bright (Juniata Valley/Spruce Creek) was third in both the long jump (14-5) and triple jump (32-0 1/4). Junior Jenni Anderson (Dubuque/Dubuque, IA) placed second in the javelin (105-8) and the discus (109-0), while freshman Andrea Denkovich (Greencastle-Antrim/Greencastle) was second in the shot put (29-1 1/2), third in the javelin (96-7) and fifth in the discus (105-6 1/2). Freshman Carol Longenecker (Harrisonburg/Harrisonburg, VA) took third in the pole vault (7-6).
