HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- Juniata College students studying German, as well as faculty from the Department of World Languages, will hold a series of events during the from Thursday, Oct. 18 through Wednesday, Oct. 23, called "Germany in Europe Campus Week" designed to create interest in studying German on the Juniata campus.

Sponsored by the college's Department of World Languages, the Office of Enrollment and the Language in Motion program, the five-day event gives area students the opportunity to see how a college language program works. The week's events were made possible through a grant for just over $2,400 from The German Information Center USA, Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany.

The week's events will begin on Thursday, Oct. 17, at 7 p.m. in Neff Lecture Hall with a screening of the film "Das Leben der Anderen," a 2006 film better known by its English title "The Lives of Others." the film is free and open to the public. The movie focuses on an intelligence officer in East Germany who is asked to spy on a prominent playwright. As the plot unfolds, the levels of betrayal and guilt build to a dramatic finish. The discussion after the film will be led by Christian Eichenmueller, visiting instructor and research assistant at Juniata's Baker Institute for Peace and Conflict Studies.

On Friday, Oct. 18, the World Languages department will hold a workshop on "Germany in Europe." The workshop is in Room C109 in Brumbaugh Academic Center. In addition there will be a display samples of coursework on posters set up in the lobby of Oller Center, the building housing the Center for International Education, on campus from Oct. 17 through Oct. 28.

Visitors will have a chance to relax and experience German culture on Saturday, Oct. 19 as the campus holds its annual Oktoberfest. Visitors can see displays on the quad and sample some German and domestic beers. The celebration is held in conjunction with a 5K "Amiable Amble" through downtown Huntingdon, which begins at 2:30 p.m. The Oktoberfest will start as people return to the quad between 3 and 4 p.m.

On Sunday, Oct. 20, the college will hold its own Juniata Cup soccer tournament at 1 p.m. on the Juniata soccer field, pitting residents of the German residence, Haus Wanderlust, against a variety of international teams representing international students at Juniata, including Team Europe and teams from Juniata's Global Living and Learning Community.

On Wednesday, Oct. 23, the college will hold its German Opportunities Day. Interested students can take detailed campus tours conducted in German and participate in a variety of activities led by international students, the German Club, educators and students who have studied abroad in Germany.

Registration starts at 9 a.m. in the lobby of Kennedy Sports and Recreation Center. At 9:15, there will be kaffeeklatch with faculty members, and visiting students can play a German game. At 9:50, the World Languages faculty will introduce the visitors to the day's schedule.

At 10 a.m., local teachers can join a group to design a lesson plan for German soccer culture, see the resources for Juniata's language outreach program Language in Motion, or take part in a roundtable discussion on "The Joys and Challenges of Teaching German." The students from local schools will cycle through several presentations, including: Language in Motion presentations on German cities, see a presentation on "German at Juniata and Beyond," design uniform, logo or fan gear for a favorite soccer club, and play German Jeopardy.

Campus tours start at 11:20 a.m. Visiting students can learn about scholarship and study-abroad opportunities at Juniata, or take part in a scavenger hunt. At 12:20 p.m., there will be a lunch with German-style stadium food.
