BASEBALL (20-17, 11-10 Commonwealth):

Thanks to a win by Messiah over Lebanon Valley, Juniata fell just shy of making the play-offs, and then lost in their season finale 17-14 to Frostburg State. Juniata showed great heart in trying to come back as they trailed by as many as 10 then scored seven runs in the final three innings to cut into the lead, but could not come all the way back. Pitching in relief Steve Brink (Central Columbia/Helterville), was the most effective hurler for Juniata as he tossed 4 1/3 innings and striking out three. Offensively senior Matt McCahan (Tussey Mountain/Saxton), playing in his final game, was 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. David Saintz (Titusville/Titusville) was 2-for-6 with two RBI and a run scored. Troy Beaver (Bellwood-Antis/Bellwood) had two hits in four at-bats with two runs scored and two runs driven in. Marc Frailey (Middletown/Middletown) was 2-for-3 and scored a pair of runs for the Eagles.

SOFTBALL (19-10, 8-4 Commonwealth):

A heartbreaking weekend for Juniata at the Commonwealth Conference play-offs as the Eagles dropped a pair of one-run games to close out their season. The Eagles lost in the opener of the tournament to the number one seed Moravian 4-3 in 11 innings, and then was eliminated by Elizabethtown by a 2-1 score. Renae Hobbs (Mount Union/Mount Union) pitched every inning of the tournament for Juniata. She tossed 16 innings and allowed only four earned runs for an ERA of 1.75 while striking out six. She did allow 20 hits but worked her way out of jams throughout the weekend. Against Moravian, Amber Helsel (Claysburg-Kimmel/Kimmel) was 2-for-5 with two runs scored for the Eagles. No other Juniata player had more than one hit against the Greyhounds and Hobbs had the team's only RBI. Sarah Patterson (Danville/Danville) scored the other run for Juniata. Against Elizabethtown Allison D'Ambrosia (State College/Boalsburg) was 2-for-3 to lead the Eagle attack. Pam Michal (Baldwin/Pittsburgh) was 1-for-3 with a run scored, and Patterson had one hit in three chances with Juniata's RBI. Leann Leymeister (Blue Mountain/Orwigsburg) and Cass Dutzer (Danville/Riverside) had the other two hits for Juniata.

TRACK & FIELD: May22-25 at NCAA Championships.
Competing at the MAC Championships, the Eagle women registered 76 points to earn a sixth-place finish, while the men's squad placed seventh with 55 points. Juniata's Dusty Lehr (Bermudian Springs/New Oxford) was named the most outstanding male athlete at the meet. Lehr earned first-place finishes in the 110-meter high hurdles and the decathlon. Another win for the Eagles came in the women's 4x400-meter relay in which the team of Rebecca Shoaf (Madison/Madison, N.J.), Juliana Hillegass (Shanksville-Stonycreek/Shanksville), Stefanie Rynkewitz (Lewistown/Lewistown), Meredith Troutman (Meyersdale/Meyersdale) shattered the Juniata school record as they ran to the victory. The Eagles also had several runner-up finishes. One day after breaking the conference record in the preliminary heats of the 400-meter dash, Rynkewitz placed second in the finals of the 400. Jeremy Weber (Garden Spot/Mohnton) finished second in the men's long jump, Adam Loser (Central York/York) was second in the high jump and Kira Troutman (Line Mountain/Valley View) finished second in both the heptathlon and the javelin. The Eagle women also scored well in the weight events as Andrea Denkovich (Greencastle/Greencastle) finished sixth and Jan Jennings (Pleasant Valley/Saylorsburg) had a seventh-place throw in the javelin. Betsey Kusniez had a seventh-place toss in the hammer throw, Denkovich and Debbie Delaney (Franklin/Reisertown, Md.) were fourth and eighth respectively in the discus and Denise Showalter (Altoona/Altoona) was seventh in the shot put. For the men Scott Shacreaw (Blairsville/Black Lick) was fifth in the javelin. Back on the track Troutman and Shoaf finished third and fourth respectively in the 400-meter hurdles and Rynkewitz placed eighth in both the 100 and 200-meter dashes. Nancy Hayes (Westminster/Westminster, Md.) set a new school record while finishing seventh in the 10,000 meters.
