Habitat for Humanity is starting the year off with their first act of community service project, “Hire a Habitater.” This service works by hiring club members out to members of the Huntingdon community to perform jobs. These jobs can be anything from yard work to painting a house.

In order to hire one of these club members, a small donation is required in exchange for the services. The donation will go towards a club member’s spring break trip, where the club will be traveling somewhere to assist other communities. The service project was designed to relieve the burden of paying for the trip. “The club is service-oriented, so you don’t want to make students have to pay to go do something good,” said club president, Kelcie Sztroin, a senior from Belle Vernon, Pa..

Last spring, the club went into Tennessee, and traveled to Alabama the year before that. Currently, the club is in the voting process to determine where they will be traveling to help communities during the upcoming spring break.

Recently, Sarah Worley, a professor of communication at Juniata College, had an opportunity to benefit from a couple of habitaters. “I’ve always seen the announcements that you could hire a habitater, but I’ve never done it until this year,” said Worley. “Now that we have two small children, we find it harder to get that kind of work done.”

Worley had a positive experience with the program, and liked that she was able to donate towards a good cause while simultaneously getting help around the house. “I was really happy to be able to make a donation to Habitat and to support their trip,” she said. “They were very professional and they showed up on time. I had a lot of fun getting to know them.” Worley has insisted that she will certainly look to hire a habitater again whenever they are doing programs like this in the future.
