On Sept. 22, the Juniata College Museum of Art’s walls were lined with photos from the “Pure Photography” exhibit featuring pictorial and modern photographs from the Syracuse University Art Collection.

The small reception boasted a moderate turn out with an array of students, community members and professors each taking their turn to walk around the exhibit, examining the collection of black and white photos.

One student, Sarah Rohrer, went to admire the art but also to learn new skills to add to her own passion for black and white photography. When asked about the exhibit itself, she said “Monochrome is my favorite thing to look at because of the spectrum of light to dark. I really like that there’s a timeline of the older and more modern photos and the separation of Pictorial and Straight styles.” Pictorial photography is in which the photographers make edits to the photo where Straight photography is leaving a photo as is.

Rohrer’s favorite image in the exhibit was Untitled by W. Eugene Smith. The photo featured an old man looking off into the distance, his eyes softly concentrating in thought on something seemingly far away. When explaining why this piece was her favorite, she said “I love portraits and it’s a very sharp photo. I appreciate the angle of the light and how it’s hitting his face. The lighting in the foreground contrasts nicely with the black background” allowing his features to become even more prominent.

”The artwork is definitely very in-depth with hidden meetings and it’s something you can come back to and always find a new meaning,” said Kirwin Segar, a freshman.

The exhibit will be in the Museum through Oct. 29 and is free to all students and community members who wish to look at some beautiful photos.
