Carnegie Mellon 4, Juniata 0

Huntingdon, Pa. ? The Juniata College men?s soccer team opened the season with a challenging non-conference opponent, and were unable to pull off the upset as the Eagles fell to 15th-ranked Carnegie Mellon by a 4-0 score in Huntingdon Wednesday afternoon. The game was the season-opener for both teams.

The Eagles were unable to get anything going in the first half as the visiting Tartans limited them to one shot in the first 45 minutes. Carnegie Mellon jumped out early as Jonathan Brown converted an assist from Sean Filipovitz in the 10th minute to take a 1-0 lead.

Brown struck again just eight minutes later as he beat Eagle keeper Nathan Pugh (Shippensburg/Shippensburg) for the second time and gave the visitors a 2-0 lead. Dan Matalski assisted on Brown?s second goal.

Filipovitz a goal of his own with ten minutes left in the first half to extend the lead to 3-0. Despite the three goals, Pugh was solid in net for Juniata, turning away seven shots in the first 45 minutes.

Juniata would bring a better effort in the second half as they tightened the defense and managed a few runs at the Carnegie Mellon goal. Kyle Dunn (Central Bucks-East/Warrington) and Jeff Gehring (Exeter Township/Reading) both tallied shots in the second stanza, but couldn?t beat keeper Dave Thomas who kept the Eagles off the scoreboard before being relieved by Rob Vargo with 15 minutes remaining.

Mark Guthridge (DuBois/DuBois) got the call in goal for Juniata in the second half, and limited the Tartans to one goal. Scott Kuppe beat the Eagle keeper with just three minutes remaining in the game to give the visitors the winning 4-0 margin. Guthridge made six saves in his 45 minutes of action in net.

Juniata will try and pick up its first win over the weekend as the team competes at the LaRoche College Tournament.
