Huntingdon, PA - Juniata College sophomore middle hitter Stephanie Kines (Towson/Towson, Md.) has been named the Commonwealth Conference volleyball player of the week for the week ending September 4. Juniata opened play in Huntingdon this past week at the ASICS Collegiate Invitational.
Kines turned in one of the top performances of her career in a five-game loss against Wittenberg, the eighth-ranked team in the CSTV/AVCA Division III Preseason Coaches Poll. She finished the match with a career-high 23 kills while committing just five errors, good for a .486 attack percentage. She added a team-best seven blocks in the match along with a serve ace and a dig.

In the tournament opener Kines pounded out she played all three games and finished with nine kills and a .562 hitting percentage. She also tossed in an ace as the Eagles posted a 3-0 win. She capped the weekend with five kills and no errors in one game played against Waynesburg. For the tournament Kines recorded 37 kills, 11 blocks, a pair of aces and a dig. She led Juniata with a .516 hitting percentage in the three matches in which she played. The Eagles finished the four-match tournament with a record of 3-1.

Kines is coming off a productive freshman season in which she earned Mid-Atlantic Region and Commonwealth Conference freshman of the year recognition. She led Juniata in hitting percentage as a freshman when she posted a .404 hitting percentage with 273 kills. She was also second on the team with 72 blocks, and led the squad with .77 blocks per game. She added 41 digs and 10 aces on the season, and also earned one Commonwealth player of the week honor during the season.

Juniata is coming off a season in which the Eagles posted a 38-1 record and advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals. The Eagles were ranked third in the CSTV/AVCA preseason poll and hold a 3-1 record through the first weekend of the 2004 season. Juniata will be back in action next weekend when the team competes at the Ashland Invitational in Ashland, Ohio.
