Juniata 3, Albright 0

Huntingdon, Pa. ? On a night where Juniata paid tribute to a milestone, Eagle women?s volleyball team continued to add to its impressive total as they rolled past conference foe Albright by a 3-0 score in Huntingdon Tuesday evening. The Eagles upped their record to 8-1 and 1-0 in the Commonwealth Conference. Albright?s record now stands at 6-4 on the year, and 0-1 in the conference.

Juniata took command early in game one on the strength of overwhelming service game. The Eagles recorded 18 serve aces in the match, nine of them coming from Abby Leonard (Shade/Johnstown) as they kept Albright from getting into an offense rhythm and claimed game one 30-12.

Game two saw middle Katie Laucks (West York/York) take over. The junior pounded a number of her team-high 11 kills in the second game, as Juniata again ran out to a big lead and won the game by a 30-14 margin.

Game three saw several Eagle reserves make use of their time in the lineup as Allie Phillips (Carlisle/Gardners), Amy Ressler (Hempfield/East Petersburg) and Aly Pompeani (Hopewell/Aliquippa) all pounded out three kills apiece to lead Juniata to the 30-16 win.

Laucks paced the team with her 11 kills, while adding three aces. She was also one of six Eagles with a block. Setter Carli Dale (Cochranton/Cochranton) passed out 37 assists and added a team-best seven digs.

Following the match a ceremony was held honoring Head Coach Larry Bock?s 1,000th victory which he achieved the past Friday night over Shippensburg. At least a dozen former players attended the event which featured stories from several former players and coaches.

Among the speakers were current Penn State men?s coach, and former Juniata assistant Mark Pavlik; current associate Head Coach and All-American at Juniata Heather Pavlik; Peggy Evans ?85 an All-American and team most valuable player at Juniata; and current team captain Dale. Presenters became choked up on many occasions as they worked to express their gratitude and appreciate for the coach who helped shape their athletic careers, and life away from volleyball.

Stories were told of Bock?s good humor, his selflessness, and his willingness to do anything for his players.

The night ended with Bock thanking his wife Lynne, along with his two daughters for all their support. The coach also found time to point out that the achievement was not about him, but rather about all the players and coaches he has worked with over the years.

The current group of Eagles will return to action on Friday when they play Washington (Mo.) in St. Louis at the Teri Clemons National Invitational. Juniata will play three teams ranked in the top-12 of the most recent CSTV/AVCA Division III poll at the Invitational.
