Salisbury, Md. ? Mishaps with directions got the Juniata College women?s volleyball team to the arena a little bit late on the first day of play at the Salisbury Invitational, but the Eagles had enough time to earn a pair of first-day victories topping Frostburg State 3-1 and Richard Stockton 3-0 in Salisbury, Md. Friday evening. Juniata improved its record to 13-2 with the two victories on the first day.
Despite not playing their sharpest volleyball of the season, and getting off to a slow start the Eagles fought back to earn the first win of the day against Frostburg State. The Bobcats took game one 30-28 before Juniata regrouped and claimed the next three games 30-17, 30-25 and 30-22.
Juniata?s middle-hitter duo of Katie Laucks (West York/York) and Stephanie Kines (Towson/Towson, Md.) once again paced the Juniata attack. Both players finished with 13 kills in the match while Laucks added a team-high four blocks, and Kines notched a team-best three aces.
Katie Charles (Manheim Township/Lancaster) contributed 12 kills for Juniata in the match, while Tara McMinn (Huntingdon/Huntingdon) controlled the defensive end with 20 digs.
Going with a lineup composed of primarily reserves the Eagles had a bit easier time with Richard Stockton, earning the win with game scores of 30-24, 30-19 and 30-21.
Kines contributed another solid all-around match this time with 15 kills, three aces and four blocks. Amy Ressler (Hempfield/East Petersburg) led Juniata?s defensive efforts with eight digs in the contest.
Juniata will play two more matches on the second day of the tourney as the Blue and Gold will tangle with John?s Hopkins and host Salisbury State on Saturday.
