Wilkes 4, Juniata 3

Huntingdon, Pa. ? The Juniata College women?s soccer team posted its third-highest goal output of the season in its match against non-conference Wilkes University on Saturday, but the three goals were not enough as the Eagles fell to Wilkes 4-3 in Huntingdon. Juniata is now 5-7-1 on the season while Wilkes improved to 7-5-1.

Juniata struck first in the match, and struck early as Alicia Walsh (Latrobe/Latrobe) netted her third goal of the season off an assist from Nikki McLellan (Parkland/Lake Forest, Ca.) at the 4:45 mark to give Juniata a 1-0 lead.
Wilkes quickly answered scoring twice to take a 2-1 lead. Tara Friedman struck first with a goal at 16:20 to knot the game at one. Christine Waldele assisted on the goal. Then Cassandra Hare scored the first of her two goals in the 37th minute to put the visitors on top 2-1.

Juniata responded as Rebecca Shoaf (Madison/Madison, N.J.) took a pass from Emily Endres (Warren/Warren) and scored with just less than five minutes remaining in the first half. The goal was the 10th of the season for Shoaf, which establishes a new Juniata women?s soccer record for goals in a season. The previous record of nine was set by Shoaf in the 2001 season.

The Colonels would once again respond to an Eagle goal with more offense as a pair of second-half goals from the visitors extended the lead. Bethany Head knocked in an unassisted tally in the 66th minute, and then Hare gave Wilkes a two-goal lead with an unassisted score at the 77:02 mark.

The Eagles answered again as Walsh and McLellan connected for the second time, cutting the lead to 4-3 with less than 10 minutes remaining. But Wilkes keeper Katie Green was able to hold off the Eagle attack and secure the win.

Green finished without a save as Juniata posted just six shots in the match. Juniata netminder Lisa Russo (Lakeland/Haskell, N.J.) finished with seven saves in the match.

Juniata will return to action next Saturday when the Eagles host Albright in a Commonwealth Conference clash.
