Juniata 9, Penn State-Altoona 0

Altoona, Pa. ? Through the first two weeks of the season, the Juniata College women?s soccer team had been getting a consistently strong defensive effort. In Sunday?s consolation match of the Lion?s Soccer Invitational Juniata?s offense was the story as Juniata scored nine goals in a 9-0 triumph over Penn State-Altoona to secure third place in the tournament. Juniata is now 1-3-1 after the victory.

Nikki McLellan (Parkland/Lake Forest, Ca.) paced the Juniata attack as she netted four goals, three of them as part of Juniata?s six-goal first half. With the scores, McLellan moved into first place in the Juniata career points list with 68 points. McLellan earned All-Tournament Team honors, and was joined on the team by fellow senior Lauren Welsh (Westminster/Finksburg, Md.) who helped Juniata?s defense allow just two goals in the two-day tournament.

Alicia Walsh (Latrobe/Latrobe) got Juniata on the board incredibly early as she knocked home the team?s first goal just 47 seconds into the game. Brosi Bradley (Bald Eagle/Port Matilda) assisted on the score. McLellan would add the next two goals, both unassisted, which came at 1:44 and 11:09 respectively.

The first-half surge continued as junior defender Kelly Howard (Bishop McCort/Johnstown) scored her first career goal 12 minutes into the half to give the Eagles a 4-0 lead. Walsh followed with her second goal of the game at the 23:41 mark off an assist from Lindsay Garvey (Willsboro Central/Essex, N.Y.). Juniata capped the first half onslaught as McLellan notched her third goal with 30:18 showing on the clock.

Juniata continued to pour it on early in the second half as Garvey scored two minutes into the second half to extend the lead to 7-0. McLellan recorded her fourth tally with eight minutes remaining in the game. Sophomore Shiloe Mokay (Delaware Academy/Treadwell, N.Y.) capped the scoring with her first career goal with a minute remaining to reach the final 9-0 margin.

While Juniata?s offense was scorching the nets, Juniata?s defense limited Penn State-Altoona to just three shots as the Eagles recorded the shutout. Lisa Russo (Lakeland/Haskell, N.J.) played all 90 minutes in goal, and made two saves to secure the shutout.

Juniata will be back in action on Thursday as the Eagles travel to play at Mansfield State.
