Widener 1, Juniata 0

Huntingdon, Pa. ? The Juniata College field hockey team controlled the offensive play of its conference opener against Widener University, but found itself on the short end on the scoreboard as the Eagles suffered a 1-0 loss in its conference opener in Chester Saturday afternoon.

Juniata fell to 1-5 with the loss, and 0-1 in the conference, while the Pioneers upped their record to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in Commonwealth action.

Juniata out-shot the home team 10-8 on the game, and earned 14 penalty corners compared to nine for Widener, but a first half goal from Jaime Carr proved to be the difference. Carr notched her second goal of the season 23 minutes into the first half off an assist from Arlene Lowthert.

It was one of only five shots on goal that Widener managed with senior goalkeeper Andrea Way (Fair Haven Union/Fair Haven, Vt.) notching four saves to keep Juniata in the match throughout.

But the Eagles were unable to punch through offensively, despite firing seven shots on target and forcing Pioneer keeper Katie Heritage into seven saves.

Sarah Bender (Eastern York/York) had five of Juniata?s 10 shots, while Elise Zimmerman (Cumberland Valley/Boiling Springs) added two.

Juniata gets back into action on Tuesday afternoon with a non-conference match at home against Neumann College.
