Albright 72, Juniata 40

READING, Pa. ? A cold-shooting day was too much for the Juniata College women?s basketball team to overcome as the Eagles suffered a 72-40 loss to Albright College in Commonwealth action at the Bollman Center Saturday afternoon.

The 40 points scored by the Eagles was its lowest total of the season as they dropped to 8-9 overall and 1-5 in Commonwealth Conference play. Albright upped its record to 12-5 overall and 3-3 in conference action.

The Eagles hung tough through the first part of the first half, cutting an early Albright lead to seven after a jumper from Lesley Snoby (Johnstown/Johnstown) at the 12:55 mark of the first half. But for the rest of the half it was all Albright as the home team outscored Juniata 23-6 over the final 12 minutes of the half. That stretch included a nearly 10 minute stretch where Juniata did not hit a field goal.

Despite finding more offensive rhythm in the second half, the Eagles were never able to battle their way back into the contest. Juniata got no closer than 25 points in the second half as the Lions controlled the game at the foul line and on the offensive glass. The Lions went 10-of-17 at the foul line in the final 20 minutes, and grabbed 14 offensive rebounds leading to 16 second-chance points.

Jess Winemiller (Dallastown/York) led the Eagles with 13 points in the game, while adding five rebounds. Kristen Kirk (Newport/Newport) was also in double figures with 10 points. Courtney Callas (Freeport/Sarver) grabbed a team-high six rebounds off the bench for the Eagles.

Albright?s Annie McMahon led all players with 17 points in the game on 4-of-6 shooting from the field while going 8-of-8 from the foul line. Marie Levins scored 11 points off the bench for the Lions who had 13 different players score in the game. Staci Waligorski pulled in nine rebounds to lead all players, while Natalie Bizzarro passed out three assists.

Juniata will look to get back into the win column on Wednesday when they host Commonwealth foe Lebanon Valley.
