Emory 11, Juniata 2

ATLANTA, Ga. ? A five-run third inning from the home team blew open a tight ballgame as the Juniata College baseball team was unable to claim its first win of 2006 as the Eagles dropped an 11-2 decision to Emory University in the final day of action at the 2006 Rawlings Classic in Atlanta, Ga. Sunday afternoon. Juniata fell to 0-3 on the season while Emory raised its record to 7-1.

The home team got a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI double from Justin Gordon and then a run-scoring single from Griffin Baum. Juniata answered with a run in the top of the second. Will Russell (Tyrone/Tyrone) drove home Walt Goedkoop (Manheim Township/Lancaster) with an RBI double, pulling Juniata within a run at 2-1.

Emory answered with another run in the bottom of the second, and then pushed across five runs in the bottom of the third to take an 8-1 lead. Emory knocked out six hits in the inning to claim the five runs.

Juniata cut into the lead in the top of the fifth. Josh Lingenfelter (Claysburg-Kimmel/Claysburg) doubled to start the frame and then came home on a Troy Beaver (Bellwood-Antis/Bellwood) single to make the score 8-2 in favor of Emory.

The home team put the game out of reach in the bottom of the seventh with a three-run inning, highlighted by single from Joe Roth that plated a pair of runs.

Eric Bridenbaugh (Central/Martinsburg) started the game on the hill for Juniata and was charged with the loss as he surrendered seven runs in 2 2-3 innings. Jason Enoch (Hempfield/Landisville) tossed four innings of relief, allowing three runs and three hits in his outing. Emory hurler Ian Ganzer allowed a pair of runs on three hits over five innings to earn the win.

Lingenfelter paced Juniata?s offense with a pair of hits and a run scored. Five other Juniata players knocked out one hit in the contest.

Gordon finished 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI and one run scored. Baum also had a pair of hits and two RBI.

Juniata will return to action on Saturday when the Eagles play Commonwealth Conference foe Moravian as part of its Spring Break trip to Phoenix, Ariz.
