Eagles Tennis Rolls To 7-0 Win

HUNTINGDON, Pa. ? The Juniata College men?s tennis team showed no signs of slowing down Monday afternoon as the Eagles claimed a 7-0 victory over Washington & Jefferson in Huntingdon. The victory was the fifth-straight win to open the season for Juniata, while Washington & Jefferson fell to 0-4 on the season.
Juniata did not drop a set as they earned six singles wins, and then swept the three doubles matches to earn the doubles point. Five of the nine contests were shutouts for Juniata.
Three of the singles matches were decided by 6-0 scores as Brandon Long (Lebanon/Lebanon), Ryan Navarro (Bishop Guilfoyle/Altoona) and Jonathan Cohen (Highland Regional/Hollywood, Fla.) all earned wins by that score. Long earned a win at fourth singles, Navarro at fifth singles and Cohen posted the win at sixth singles.
Neil Eicher (Altoona/Altoona) notched a 6-3, 6-3 victory at first singles for Juniata. Also posting singles wins were Jonathan Skoner (Central Catholic/Pittsburgh) at second singles, and Brian Sykes (Gateway Regional/Woodburry Heights, N.J.) at third singles. Skoner took his match by a score of 6-2, 6-2, while Sykes captured a 6-3, 7-6 victory.
Two doubles matches were settled by 8-0 scores as Juniata swept those contests. Robert Bowser (Dallastown/York) and Tom Nelson (State College/State College) were 8-0 winners at second doubles. The team of Skoner and Jack Walfish (Spring-Ford/Royersford) posted an 8-0 win at third doubles. Juniata?s first doubles team of Eicher and Long fought to a 9-7 win to complete the sweep.
Juniata returns to action Tuesday afternoon as the Eagles open conference play with a match at Commonwealth rival Susquehanna.
