CALIFORNIA, Pa. - The top-ranked Juniata College women\'s volleyball team battled hard but came up a little short against Division II California University of Pennsylvania, falling to the Vulcans 3-1 (30-21, 30-28, 20-30, 30-25), Wednesday night in California, Pa. Junior Amber Thomas (Ephrata, Pa./Conestoga Valley) led the Eagles with 22 kills, while Paige Johnston (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) tallied 12 kills. Megan Sollenberger (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) recorded 29 digs over the four-game match, and Erin Albert (Philipsburg, Pa./Philipsburg-Osceola) had four blocks. \"California\'s a very good team, and we came out real sluggish,\" said Juniata head coach Larry Bock. \"Some of that\'s my fault; we practiced the team real hard last night. But we didn\'t pass or dig the ball very well tonight, and to beat a team like California we need to have really good first contacts.\" Juniata falls to 4-1 overall with the loss, and heads to Ithaca College this weekend for the Bomber Invitational. The Eagles will face Oneonta State, St. John Fisher, RIT, and New York University in the tournament, which begins Friday in Ithaca, N.Y.
