HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- Juniata College erased a five-point halftime deficit in the first five minutes of the second stanza, and posted an 84-69 win over the University of Scranton, in Landmark Conference men's basketball action Saturday in Huntingdon, Pa.
Trailing 42-37 at the intermission, Juniata (9-5, 2-1 Landmark) outscored the Royals 10-4 to open the second half, finally taking the lead at the 15:18 mark on Brian Cannon's (Fallston, Md./Fallston) jumper.
A Jeff Berkey (Stoystown, Pa./Shanksville-Stonycreek) trey stretched the Eagle lead to seven points, 57-50 with 11:38 remaining.
Scranton (7-6, 0-3 Landmark) chiseled the Juniata lead down to two points, 57-55, on a three by Paul Hawk followed soon after by a pair of foul shots by Paul Biagioli. The Eagles responded with a pair of layups by Cannon, and, after Scranton's Eli Londo and Juniata's Brent Ferko (Sarver, Pa./Freeport) traded three-pointers, Eric Mueseler (Latrobe, Pa./Latrobe) padded the Juniata lead with two free throws.
The Eagle lead reached 10 points, 74-64, on another Berkey three-pointer with 4:28 left on the clock, and remained in double-digits the rest of the way.
Cannon led the Eagles with 25 points and eight rebounds, while Berkey had 20 points to go with his eight boards. Justin Baker (Nanty Glo, Pa./Bishop Carroll) tallied four blocks to go with nine points. Juniata outrebounded the Royals 40-29 during the game.
Biagioli was Scranton's high scorer with 21 points, while Londo finished with 12.
Juniata will return to action on Friday night, when the Eagles host the United States Merchant Marine Academy at 7:30 p.m. in Huntingdon.
