ONEONTA, N.Y. -- Juniata College's early lead didn't stand up as the Eagle field hockey squad dropped a 3-2 decision to Oneonta State, Saturday afternoon in Oneonta, N.Y. The Eagles took the initial lead of the game as junior Erin Smith (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra) scored an unassisted goal in the eighth minute off a rebounded defensive save to put Juniata (1-4, 0-0 Landmark) up by one. Oneonta State tied it up in the 20th minute of play when freshman Jacqueline Camp took a pass from senior Somer Shuffield and converted it for a goal to knot the game at 1-1. Oneonta took the lead with 9:58 remaining in the opening half on Red Dragon junior Kathryn Kubaryk's goal, and two minutes later Oneonta sophomore Ainsley Stoll padded the Red Dragons' lead after finishing a breakaway play by Shuffield. Juniata cut the deficit in half in the 62nd minute when Smith scored her second goal of the day on a rebound, reducing the Red Dragon lead to 3-2. Juniata was awarded a penalty corner as time expired, however the Eagles were unable to convert the opportunity and Oneonta held on for the victory. Senior Abby Funk (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg) started the game in goal for the Eagles and took the loss making two saves in 29 minutes of play. Junior Denalyn Spratt (Haddon Heights, N.J./Haddon Heights) played the remaining 40 minutes, turning aside two shots on goals. Oneonta State goalie Erika Dombkowski played the entire 70 minutes in goal for the Red Dragons, making seven saves. Juniata outshot Oneonta State 12-8, but the Red Dragons received nine penalty corner opportunities to the Eagles' eight. The Eagles return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 10, when they play their sixth consecutive road game of the season with a matchup against Elizabethtown College.
