Ashcraft scores 1,000th career point as Juniata women's hoops upsets #16 Moravian, 64-58

HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- Juniata College senior Kelly Ashcraft (Bellefonte, Pa./State College Area) scored her 1,000th career point on Saturday afternoon, but it may be her 1,002nd point that she remembers for much longer.
Ashcraft's layup with 48 seconds remaining put the Eagles in the lead for good and lifted Juniata to a 64-58 win over 16th-ranked Moravian College, in a Landmark Conference women's basketball matchup in Huntingdon, Pa.
Moravian came into the contest ranked 16th in the USA Today/ESPN Division III poll, and 17th in the D3hoops.com ranking.
Only minutes after reaching the 1,000-career point mark with a jumper that cut Moravian's lead to one point, Ashcraft broke a 58-58 tie with a second-effort put-back from under the basket. The Greyhounds' Emily Smith failed to connect on a game-tying basket at the other end of the floor, and Moravian began fouling to force Juniata to defend its shallow lead at the free-throw line.
Sophomore Jen Hnatuck (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Trinity) and senior Claudia McDowell (Alexandria, Pa./Juniata Valley) each went 2-of-2 at the line in the final 30 seconds, while Moravian went 0-of-3 from the field down the stretch.
Ashcraft finished with 14 points, and now has 1,002 points over her four years at Juniata College. She was one of four Eagles to finish in double-figures; senior Gina Piccolini (Indiana, Pa./Indiana) was 3-of-5 from three-point range and finished with 13 points, while freshman guard Ashton Bankos (York, Pa./York Catholic) was 5-of-10 from the floor on her way to a 12-point night. Hnatuck logged her fifth double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Moravian's (17-3, 7-2 Landmark) Hilary Murray scored 12 points to lead the Greyhounds offensively, while Amanda Brown chipped in with 11 points.
Juniata (10-10, 4-5 Landmark) returns to the court on Saturday, Feb. 7, when it faces Catholic University in Washington, D.C.
