HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- In addition to featuring a Juniata College student playing a Mendelssohn violin concerto, the Juniata College Orchestra will perform Beethoven's "Symphony No. 1" in concert at 3 p.m., Sunday, April 3 in Rosenberger Auditorium in the Halbritter Center for the Performing Arts.

The concert tickets are $5 for adults and free for Juniata students and those under 18. The ensembles will be conducted by Rebekah K. O'Brien, lecturer in music at Juniata and director of the orchestra.

The program will open with chamber music performed by Juniata's honors cello trio. The three cellists will perform "Divertimento in D Major," by Franz Joseph Haydn. The three cellists are: Andreu Casas-Salleras, an international student from Spain; Katerina Korch, a senior from Shillington, Pa.; and Sarah Border, a junior from Williamsport, Pa.

After the introductory chamber music section, the concert will showcase James Rixey, a violinist and junior from Mechanicsburg, Pa., in playing "Violin Concerto in E Minor, Op. 64," written by Felix Mendelssohn. The concerto is from the Romantic era and is one of the most popular violin concertos for classical music audiences.

Rixey was the winner of Juniata's 2010 Concerto Competition.

After a short intermission, the entire orchestra will perform "Symphony No. 1 in C Major," by Ludwig van Beethoven. Beethoven's first symphony is in four movements and features wind instruments at the forefront of the composition. The music is also influenced by Beethoven's teacher, Joseph Haydn.
