HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- Two Juniata College students and an AmeriCorps representative will read to local preschool and elementary school students as part of their AmeriCorps volunteer program. The students will read from "Whose Shoes? A Shoe for Every Job" at the Early Childhood Education Center on the Juniata campus at 10 a.m., Friday, April 29 in the center.

On April 19, two Juniata students, Chelsea Wilson, a sophomore from Gwynn Oak, Md., and Jessica Maxon, a 2009 Juniata graduate and AmeriCorps representative from Phillipsburg, Pa., read from the book at Bethel AME Church in Mount Union, Pa.

Tiereney Miller, a senior from Altoona, Pa., and Maxon also will read the "Whose Shoes" book to the preschoolers at the Early Childhood center for the April 29 event.

The book is by Steven Swinburne, and the author focuses on the footwear worn by people is such different jobs as nurses, construction workers or ballet dancers. Swinburne's book asks the readers to play a game that matches each shoe pictured to a correct corresponding job.

The two programs are part of the PA One Book Program, in which a book by a Pennsylvania author or a book chosen for Pennsylvania is chosen by the Pennsylvania Library Association. Volunteers take the chosen book into local classrooms and give copies of the book to all the students after participating in a reading event.
