FOOTBALL (5-5, 4-5 Commonwealth):
It was a record-breaking day for the Juniata Eagles football team. Unfortunately, the day did not end with a Juniata victory in the team's season-ending clash with Lycoming. Junior running back Craig Moshier (Coudersport/Coudersport) broke the school record for rushing yards in a game and a season with his 222-yard performance. The record-breaking performance came in a losing effort as the Eagles dropped their season finale 55-24 against Lycoming. The loss dropped Juniata's record to 5-5 on the season, and the Eagles finished 4-5 in the MAC. Moshier has been a constant for the Eagles this season, particularly over the second-half of the season. The diminutive back has topped the 100-yard mark in four straight games, the first Eagle back to achieve that feat since the 1990 season. His 222 yards broke Dennis DeRenzo's team record of 213 for a single game also set in the 1990 season. And Moshier cleared DeRenzo out of the record book as he gained a total of 1,177 yards rushing this season, which broke the previous record of 1,173. The day started badly for the Eagle team, however, as Lycoming jumped out to an early 14-0 lead. The Eagles responded with a 61-yard scoring run from Moshier, which put him over 1,000 yards for the season. A failed conversion attempt left the score at 14-6 in favor of the Warriors. Lycoming responded with 14 more points to push their lead to 28-6. The Eagles were not done fighting yet, as quarterback Greg Troutman (Meyersdale/Meyersdale) completed a scoring pass to Nate Leach (Shade/Central City) to cut the lead to 28-12. Lycoming responded again, this time with a score right before the half to head into the locker room leading 35-12.
The second-half for Juniata was all about Moshier, as the Eagles fed the running back the ball in an effort to climb back into the game. Moshier responded by rushing for 122 yards and two scores after intermission, but the Eagles could not climb much closer. The game saw Lycoming out-gain the Eagles 536 to 377. Juniata could put together only 117 yards passing, and were forced into three interceptions, one of which was returned for a touchdown.
For the game, Troutman finished 6-22 for 76 yards and a touchdown. Leach led Eagle receivers with three catches for 32 yards and a score. Jared Lucas (Upper Dauphin/Elizabethville) led the Eagles in receiving yards on the strength of a 38-yard bomb he reeled in from back-up quarterback Jon Collins (Lewistown/Lewistown). Defensively for the Eagles, Peter Thomas (Mechanicsburg/Mechanicsburg) led the team with 10 tackles, one for a loss. Bill Bishop (Punxsutawney/Punxsutawney), Jason Stouffer (Newport/Newport) and Matt Garner (Bellwood-Antis/Tyrone) each had seven tackles. Paul Evans (Huntingdon/Huntingdon) picked off his seventh pass of the season, and Fred Taber (Calvert Hall College/Bel Air, Md.) and Byron Latterner (Penn Cambria/Gallitzin) each had a sack. The Eagles finished with a 5-5 record for the second-consecutive season.
