Recent Juniata Graduate Named Fulbright Fellow to Republic of Georgia

HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- Jared Edgerton, a 2012 graduate of Juniata College from East Windsor, N.J., majoring in political economy, recently was named a Fulbright Fellow to teach English at the University of Tbilisi, in Tbilisi, Republic of Georgia for the 2012-2013 academic year.
Edgerton is a 2008 graduate Heightstown High School.
Edgerton, the son of Ilene and David Edgerton of East Windsor, will attend graduate school after completing his fellowship, and is currently looking at programs in public policy and international relations.
Currently, Edgerton is working at the U.S. Army War College, in Carlisle, Pa., at the Peacekeeping and Stability Operations Institute, where he is writing strategic lessons on topics such as capacity building.
He amassed a lot of international experience while at Juniata. Edgerton studied at the University of Fez, in Morocco, in spring semester 2011. Before that, he spent fall semester 2010 at the University of Masaryk, in Brno, Czech Republic and spent a three weeks on a summer program in The Gambia.
In summer 2011, Edgerton worked as an intern at the Association of Diplomatic Studies in the U.S. Department of State, in Washington, D.C. At the same time he worked as a contributing writer for the PoliticsPA news website.
Currently, Edgerton is working at the U.S. Army War College, in Carlisle, Pa., at the Peacekeeping and Stability Operations Institute, where he is writing strategic lessons on topics such as capacity building.
Edgerton received numerous academic honors while at Juniata. He was named a James A. Finnegan Fellow in 2010, which supported a summer internship in a Pennsylvania state agency. He also was a finalist for Best Undergraduate Thesis 2012 Award from the Peace and Justice Studies Association.
Edgerton also was a member of a number of academic societies, including Omicron Delta Kappa Member, the leadership honors society, Sigma Iota Rho, the international studies honors society, and Pi Sigma Alpha, the political science honors society. He also served as treasurer for the Juniata College Executive Board and was a teaching and research assistant for the Department of Politics.
The Fulbright U.S. Student Program equips future American leaders with the skills they need to thrive in increasingly global environment by providing funding for one academic year of study, language instruction or research abroad, to be conducted after graduation from an accredited university.
Fellows undertake self-designed programs in disciplines ranging from social sciences, business, communication and performing arts to physical sciences, engineering and education.
The U.S. Student Program awards approximately 1,100 grants annually and currently operates in over 140 countries worldwide. The Fulbright Program is sponsored by the United States Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. Financial support is provided by an annual appropriation from Congress to the Department of State, with significant contributions from participating governments and host institutions in the United States and abroad.
The presidentially appointed J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board formulates policy guidelines and makes the final selection of all grantees. The Institute of International Education administers and coordinates the activities relevant to the U.S. Student Program, including an annual competition for the scholarships. The Fulbright Program also awards grants to American teachers and faculty to do research, lecture and teach overseas. In addition, some 2,200 foreign Fulbright students and scholars come to the United States annually to study, carry out research, and lecture at U.S. universities, colleges and secondary schools.
