Juniata students speak on the topic of gun control.

A month after the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., gun regulation is still being debated in Congress and in the media. As new gun laws are proposed, Juniata students voice their own opinions on gun control:

Laura Vannucci '15, New Fairfield, Conn.:
I don't personally own a gun. I'm okay with other people owning guns, but back when the Second Amendment was actually made, they only had muskets. Technically, if they were actually holding true to the Constitution they would only allow muskets. I do believe that people should have the right to protect themselves, but on the other hand I don't think it is necessary to have an automatic weapon.

Lewis Nash '15, Philadelphia, Pa.:
I don't think that this whole gun regulation thing is a good thing. Whenever you take away a society's guns, you're taking away their ability to revolt. That's one of our rights in our Constitution, but we keep forgetting to read our Constitution to figure out our rights. We're slowly allowing the government to take away more and more of our rights without even paying attention.

Beverly Kamin '16, Arlington, Va.:
I think that our country definitely needs more gun control. I think it's horrible that we have not done this sooner, and I think that we need to prevent massacres like Sandy Hook from happening again. I think that gun regulation is definitely a very good idea and I like that Barack Obama is doing this.

David Kaas '14, Gardners, Pa.:
I feel that everyone has the right to have a gun, but I do understand that there is some need for some control once in a while, like nonintrusive control. I really do think the NRA should start backing that because anything they back will pass.

Miranda Wales '14, Hollidaysburg, Pa.:
I don't think you should own military-style weapons, because no one needs that but the military. But I do think it might be nice to own one. I mean, what if you hunt or that kind of stuff?

Audrey Zehren '14, Seattle, Wash.:
People shouldn't have an easy time getting their hands on guns. I do think guns should be registered. You should always know who has the guns. What if they sell it and the person who buys it is slightly nutso? People are always complaining, "If they know that we have guns, they'll come get ours first!" But if you have nothing to hide, then you have nothing to hide.
