Opening Week: Freshmen Reflect on First Few Days

Going off to college for the first time is an exciting experience for many. Students always are a little nervous leaving home for the first time. However, none of the freshmen know exactly what is in store for them during freshman year. Juniata does a great job of introducing and integrating freshmen to life here at Juniata through Inbound and through events during Welcome Week. After the first week of classes, students have a general idea of how the rest of the semester will play out and they have gained some insight on the perks of college life. Freshmen students express their opinions about their first week here at Juniata.

Jeralyne Hyland '17, Laurel, Del.

"It's a natural feeling at Juniata. It isn't as overwhelming as college is made out to be. I expected confusion and for my experience here to be completely different than what it is. Classes are great. I enjoy them and I like my schedule. Juniata has a very welcoming atmosphere."

Sierra Mellish '17, Williamsburg, Pa.

"Juniata College is really awesome. I really love it here. I always assumed college would be overwhelming and that I would get homesick and miss things, but the students and people I have met here have helped. I'm not homesick. The staff is great and I like my classes so far."

Dane Polisena '17, Adelaide, Australia

"It's very welcoming, very hyperactive. You jump into things very quickly here. It's a bit of a culture shock for me. Juniata is very socially dependent, meaning that it's a closer environment. It really sets up a lifestyle for you, how you live, what you do, where you are. I like how Juniata is almost like a family."

Davon Jackson '17, Deptford, N.J.

"My first classes were cancelled, so I've only been doing football so far. Everyone here is really really nice. I was feeling a little homesick, and a lot of people were helping me with that. Everyone smiles at you and says hi when you walk by. It's a nice atmosphere here on campus.'

Futaba Asakawa '17, Fukuoka, Japan

"It's great here because many people understand that I am an international student. Many people help me with my English. My classes this semester will help me improve my English. My Inbound group had the same interests as me, so it was easy to find and make friends. This campus is great because there is a lot of green. It's really pretty."
