HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- In honor of the 80th anniversary of Juniata College music programs, the college's Wind Symphony and Concert Band will join forces in a celebratory concert at 3 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 4 in Rosenberger Auditorium in the Halbritter Center for the Performing Arts on the Juniata campus.

The concert admission is $5 for adults and free for those under 18 or Juniata students with a valid college ID.

The concert includes an appearance by Ibrook Tower, professor emeritus of music at Juniata and director of the college bands from 1974 to 1995, who will guest conduct the ensembles. In addition, James Latten, professor of music, will also conduct the groups during the concert.

Opening the performance, the Concert Band will play "American Civil War Fantasy" by Jerry Bilik. The epic composition traces the history of the Civil War through traditional folk songs of the era, such as "Dixie," "John Brown's Body," "Battle Cry of Freedom," "Battle Hymn of the Republic" and many others.

Next the band plays another nation's folk music, "A Gaelic Ballad," by Frank Erickson, which traces traditional Irish music. "Stratosphere," by Otto Schwarz, honors a 1960 stunt in which American Joseph Kittinger leaped from a baloon more than 30,000 meters above Earth. The music describes the quiet opening, the turbulence of the jump and the gentle landing.

The Wind Symphony will perform "Timestorm," by Steven Melillo, which is the first movement of a multistage composition called "Stormworks." Next the band will play "Coil," by Steven Bryant, which mimics the electronic buzz of a Tesla coil, followed by "Dance of the Hours," by Takashi Suzuki.

The ensemble will then play an American classic, "Lincoln Portrait," by Aaron Copland (best known for "Appalachian Spring" and "Rodeo"), accompanied by narration delivered by Jim Tuten, professor of history at Juniata.

Both groups will unite on stage to perform "The Juniata College Alma Mater," with a new arrangement by Jim Latten, followed by "Timepiece," by Randall Standridge, which opens with clock-like chimes and explores time through music means and sound effects.

Next, the combined ensembles will perform "Time Circles," by John Prescott, a swirling, ethereal composition, followed by "Bones Trombone," by Henry Fillmore, an early American composer who wrote music for circuses and jazz bands. The concert will end with a rendition of "America the Beautiful," arranged by Philip Rothman.
