Rolling up a California roll.

On Wednesday, Feb. 7, Juniata students had the opportunity to learn an interesting skill that hails from a unique culture.

The Center for International Education and the Japanese Club hosted Sushi Night for students. For just two dollars, interested Juniata students could learn how to make Japanese-style sushi. They then got to enjoy the fruits of their labor with a casual sushi dinner in Ellis Ballroom.

The Sushi Night was a fundraiser for the Japanese Club, which did a good job of advertising and pulling in a full house. "Around 80 people signed up for the event," said freshman Shayla Fitzsimmons. The offer of foreign food was a big draw for students.

"I like sushi because it represents the Japanese culture" said Austin Meyer, freshman member of the Japanese club.

Besides the wasabi, the hot condiment used in sushi preparation, perhaps the most important aspect of this event was the fellowship between cultures. "Events like this allow many cultures to come together and talk with each other without any pressures that life brings," said Fitzsimmons. "I met foreign-exchange students that otherwise I probably would have never met."
