FOOTBALL (1-1, 1-0 MAC): Sept. 20 vs. Delaware Valley*
*MAC Opponent.

The Juniata football team captured their first win of the season when they stopped Moravian 21-14 in Bethlehem. The win improved Juniata to 1-1 on the season, and places them at 1-0 in MAC play. Quarterback Greg Troutman (Meyersdale/Meyersdale) rushed for a career high 169 yards and a touchdown, and also threw for 122 yards and a score to lead the Eagle offense. Running back Craig Moshier (Coudersport/Coudersport) chipped in with 68 yards rushing and gained fifty yards with four receptions to give him 118 total yards on the day. John Boyer (Indian Valley/Belleville) grabbed five passes for 57 yards, while Gerry Miceli (Mechanicsburg/Mechanicsburg) caught his first career touchdown pass when he hauled in a two-yard toss from Troutman.

Defensively Matt Garner (Bellwood-Antis/Bellwood) and Bryon Latterner (Penn Cambria/Gallitzin) each had a team-best 13 tackles. Latterner recorded one-and-a-half sacks on the day, while Garner joined him with half a sack and recovered a fumble. Aaron Snair (Mechanicsburg/Mechanicsburg) made 10 stops for Juniata, several of them in key situations in the fourth quarter. Bill Bishop (Punxsutawney/Punxsutawney) had nine tackles for the Eagles, Brett Merrell (Danville/Danville) had eight tackles and an interception and Steve Parsons (Blackhawk/Beaver Falls) garnered seven stops with a fumble recovery. Punter Jesse Leonard (Shade/Johnstown) had had nine kicks with a 36-yard average, including his career-best 59-yard effort.

WOMEN?S SOCCER (2-4, 0-1 Commonwealth): Sept. 20 at Widener*.

Juniata dropped a pair of tough contests on the week. On Saturday they played even with conference opponent Lebanon Valley, but couldn?t get on the scoreboard as they fell by a 1-0 score. Lindsey Treon (Duncansville/Hollidaysburg) made five saves in the loss. Juniata?s other defeat came at Seton Hill where they fell by a 5-1 count. Alicia Walsh (Latrobe/Latrobe) scored the lone goal for Juniata, her first of the season. The goal was assisted by Becky Davis (York/Carmel, Ca.) her first assist of the season. With the goal, Walsh became the 12th different Juniata player to score a goal so-far during the 2003 season.

FIELD HOCKEY (3-2, 0-0 Commonwealth): Sept. 18 at Philadelphia Biblical; Sept. 20 at Albright*
*Commonwealth Conference match.

Juniata won their only match of the week when they topped Swarthmore 3-1 on the road. Billie Rickenbaugh (East Juniata/McAlisterville) had a pair of goals, her second and third of the season, in the win. Grace McCluskey (West Perry/Elliotsburg) scored the other goal for the Eagles, and assisted on one of Rickenbaugh?s tallies. The score was McCluskey?s first of the season. Bestsey Kusniez (Boyertown/Gilbertsville) and Elise Zimmerman (Cumberland Valley/Boiling Springs) each had an assist in the match. Melonie Sappe? (Dallas/Shavertown) stopped three shots in the cage for Juniata.

WOMEN?S TENNIS (0-4, 0-3 MAC): Sept. 16 vs. Penn State-Altoona; Sept. 17 vs. Susquehanna*.

The Eagles played three matches on the week, and fell in all three. The Eagles dropped a home contest to Lycoming and then fell on the road at Indiana (Pa.) and Moravian. Molly Coursey (Westminster/Hanover) nearly earned a singles win against Lycoming before dropping a tie-breaker. Coursey and Stephanie Shaver (Central Cambria/Ebensburg) dropped a tie-breaker at the second doubles position that would have earned Juniata a point.



MEN?S SOCCER (2-4-1, 1-0 Commonwealth): Sept. 17 at Lycoming; Sept. 20 at Widener*.

The Eagles got the monkey off their back in a big way as they won their first two games of the season including a 2-0 victory in a conference match against Lebanon Valley. The other win came in convincing fashion 9-1 over Mt. Aloysius. Against Lebanon Valley, Jeff Gehring (Exeter Township/Reading) scored both goals in the win, his fifth and sixth goals of the season. Gehring is leading the Eagles in scoring despite missing several games with a knee injury. Freshman Josh Cady (Malvern Prep./Frazer) assisted on Gehring?s second tally. Mark Guthridge (DuBois/DuBois) picked up his first career shutout while making one save in net. Against Mt. Aloysius Juniata had five different players get on the scoreboard. Cady put away three goals for his first career hat-trick, while Gehring added a pair of goals and an assist. Mike Alianiello (Altoona/Altoona) also notched two scores while Rob Bowser (Dallastown/York) and Rick McLellan (Moon/Hanover) each scored once. Nathan Pugh (Shippensburg/Shippensburg) had one save in net for Juniata.

WOMEN?S VOLLEYBALL (7-0, 0-0 Commonwealth): Sept. 16 at Albright*; Sept. 19-20 at Wash. Invite (Mo.)
*Commonwealth Conference match.

Juniata remained unbeaten on the season with four wins at the Edinboro Invitational. Juniata topped Edinboro and Ashland by 3-1 scores and swept past both Lees-McRae and Mercyhurst 3-0. Danielle Hart (Central/Roaring Spring) knocked out 64 kills over the weekend, while bringing up 33 digs. Katie Laucks (West York/York) was right behind her with 62 kills along with 12 blocks and 16 digs and a .317 hitting percentage. Johanna Holtan (Fargo North/Fargo, N.D.) spearheaded the defense with 95 digs on the weekend. Her performance moved her into second place all-time in career digs at Juniata. Carli Dale (Cochranton/Cochranton) dished out 193 assists over the weekend, while adding 59 digs nine blocks and four aces. Katie Charles (Manheim Township/Lancaster) was also solid for Juniata with 36 kills, eight aces, 36 digs and four blocks. Juniata hit .235 as a team over the weekend. Hart had 22 kills in the win over Ashland which was the single-match high for the weekend. Holtan?s 31 digs against Edinboro was the best in that category on the weekend.

MEN?S AND WOMEN?S CROSS COUNTRY: Sept. 20 at Roanoke Invitational.

The Juniata College men?s and women?s cross country team?s competed at the First Annual Western Pennsylvania Championships on Saturday. The meet featured six teams competed on both the men?s and women?s side. On the women?s side the Eagles finished fourth out of the six teams, coming in with a team score of 96. The men finished the race in sixth place out of the six teams. Juniata?s Justin Fritzius (Central York/York) was the top finisher for the men?s unit with his 21st-place finish. Mike Vella (Hollidaysburg/Hollidaysburg) was 35th followed by Chris Sheaffer (Central York/York) who placed 43rd. Matt Chabot (Hampden Academy/Hampden, ME) and Jeremy Lampert (Portsmouth/Portsmouth, N.H.) rounded out the top-five for Juniata as they placed 47th and 48th respectively. On the women?s side, Nancy Hayes (Westminster/Westminster, Md.) was the top finisher for the blue and gold. Hayes placed 9th overall and came across the line in a time of 21:37. Right behind her in 11th place was freshman Elena Amato (Notre Dame Prep./Baltimore, Md.). Senior Stefanie Rynkewitz (Lewistown/Lewistown) finished 20th for the Eagles. Two more freshmen completed the top five for the blue and gold. Lauren Gates (Bishop Guilfoyle/Altoona) and Lia Bella (Morris Catholic/Rockaway, N.J.) finished 28th and 30th. Sarah Bay (Central Dauphin/Harrisburg) was right behind them with a 31st-place finish.
