Huntingdon, PA ? Juniata College junior Jayme Fye (Philipsburg/Philipsburg) has earned Commonwealth Conference pitcher of the week for his efforts with the Eagle baseball team.

Fye pitched in one game this week, helping Juniata to a victory over defending conference champion Messiah College. He pitched eight of the nine innings and allowed three runs in the 7-4 Juniata win. He scattered 10 hits in the game, and struck out a pair of Falcon hitters.

?Jayme was our go-to guy all last season, and he?s continued that role in the early going this year,? Juniata Head Coach George Zanic stated. ?He?s absolutely the player we want to have the ball in his hand with the game on the line. Messiah is the team that was picked to win our conference this season, and he just shut them down. Jayme has risen to meet the challenge of conference games a number of times, and I see no reason why he won?t continue to do so.?

Fye has already captured a pair of victories in conference games this season. Along with his win over Messiah, he held Moravian to one run in seven innings and allowed just five hits while striking out five. All told this season he is 2-0 with a 2.40 ERA in his two conference starts. Last season, he posted a 5-3 record in conference games with an ERA of 3.61.

For the season Fye currently leads Juniata?s starters with an earned run average of 4.03. He is currently 2-1 on the season and has pitched in 22 and a third innings. He has had ten strike outs on the season and has surrendered 28 hits. He is currently tied for eighth in the Commonwealth Conference for strike outs with ten, and is second in innings pitched.

With Fye on the mound Juniata is off to a 6-6 start in 2004. Picked to finish third in the Commonwealth Conference preseason coaches poll, Juniata is 3-1 in conference play in the early season. The Eagles will be in action on Thursday when they host Penn State-Altoona for doubleheader action.
