4/3/04--Pittsburgh, Pa.? The Juniata College track and field teams posted a pair of strong finishes at the Western PA Championships held at Carnegie Mellon University Saturday afternoon. The Juniata women?s squad broke a pair of school records and recorded three first-place finishes as they placed sixth out of a 14-team field. On the men?s side the Eagles finished the meet in 13th place out of 15 squads.

For the women Nancy Hayes (Westminster/Westminster, Md.) posted a time of 40:52.60 to win the 10,000 meters and break the school record. Hayes broke her own record of 41:41.41 in the event. Also claiming a victory was Kira Troutman (Line Mountain/Valley View) who threw the javelin 42.32 meters on her final throw to win. Another school record fell in the 3,000 meter steeplechase as Katey Glunt (Bellefonte/Bellefonte) broke her own school record in a time of 12:05.00 to claim a win in that event. Glunt had set the school record in the steeplechase the previous week. Glunt also finished sixth in the 5,000 to round out her day.

Meredith Troutman (Meyersdale/Meyersdale) had a solid day in the sprints for Juniata as she finished sixth in the 100 meter dash and seventh in the 200 meter. Stefanie Rynkewitz (Lewistown/Lewistown) added a ninth-place finish in the 200. Elena Amato (Notre Dame Prep./Baltimore Md.) rounded out the top-10 finishes for Juniata as she placed seventh in the 800 meter. The Eagles also got a sixth-place finis in the 4x400-meter relay, finishing with a time of 4:16.35.

On the men?s side Justin Fritzius (Central York/York) earned the top finish as he placed third in the steeplechase. Fritzius covered the 3,000 meters in a time of 10:07.44. Randy Anderson (Dubois/Dubois) had a solid day in the jumps for the Eagles. Anderson finished eighth in the long jump and 10th in the triple jump. Jeremy Weber (Garden Spot/Mohnton) joined Anderson with a top-10 finish as he placed fourth in the long jump.

Adam Loser (Central York/York) added a ninth-place finish in the high jump to complete Juniata?s success in the field events. Mike Vella (Hollidaysburg/Hollidaysburg) capped Juniata?s top-10 finishes as he placed 10th in the 5,000.

Juniata will be back in action on Wednesday as the Eagles will host their own meet in Huntingdon.
