HUNTINGDON, PA. -- Caitlan Zlatos, a sophomore from Crownsville, Md. and the daughter of Laura and John Zlatos, has been chosen to receive the prestigious Andrew Mutch Scholarship from the St. Andrews Society of Philadelphia.

Only five students from 19 participating colleges and universities in and around Philadelphia are selected to attend one of the five universities in Scotland for one year. Zlatos is the 11th Juniata College student to receive this prestigious award since Juniata's affiliation with the program in 1979. She will study at the University of Edinboro during her junior year, the 2004-05 academic year.

To be considered for the scholarship, a student must first be in the top fifth of the sophomore class. The candidate then completes an application and interviews with the president, provost, dean of international programs, international education committee, and the scholarship committee. From these interviews, each institution selects one candidate who then travels to Philadelphia to compete for one of the five scholarships.

Zlatos, who is studying geology and environmental science at Juniata, has participated in several water quality research projects during her time at Juniata. During the 2003-2004 school year she was a student researcher for a water-quality monitoring project along Spruce Creek, one of Pennsylvania's most renowned trout streams. She will continue her research on Spruce Creek and a tributary, Warriors Mark Run Creek, this summer.

She is a member of the Women's Lacrosse Club and the Recycling Committee, serving as treasurer for both organizations. She also is a member of the Geological Society of America, the Conservation Club and the Environmental Science Society.

She also received the Robert Byrd Scholarship from the State of Maryland.
