Biography

Professor McBride studied painting at Cornell University (M.F.A.) and Rhode Island School of Design (B.F.A.). In addition, he has taken courses, and participated in workshops and seminars in advanced photography. He has studied at New York's School of Visual Art and the Haystack Mountain School of Crafts.

He joined the faculty at Juniata in 1970 and was department chair from 1970-1988. He served as director of exhibitions from 1970 to 1997. Professor McBride's teaching experience includes Green Mountain College, Keene State College, and Nathaniel Hawthorne College. He has been a guest artist and lecturer at schools in China, England, and Germany, and has taught workshops at Haystack Mountain School of Crafts and Peter's Valley Craftsmen.

His work has been viewed in one-person and group exhibits; is part of several permanent collections, including the PEPSICO Headquarters in Purchase, NY; the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in Los Angeles, California; and has received many awards including first prize at the Mid-Atlantic Fine Arts Exhibit and first prizes at the Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts.

Trained in the figurative tradition his work is strongly expressionist and tends towards abstraction. Spontaneity has always been an important element in his work. Through his experiences in China, he learned to bring more control to his gestural marks and view the canvas as infinite space. His goal, as an artist, is to create symbols that reflect our times.

He is married to education department professor Kim Richardson, Ph.D.
