Volleyball
A four-year letter winner and three-year starter at setter, she earned All-Middle Atlantic Conference honors and first team All-America honors three straight years from 1985-87. A two-year team captain, she helped Juniata to four consecutive MAC titles, three NCAA Division III semifinal appearances and a 178-29 overall record during her career. As a senior, she was named to the NCAA championship all-tournament team. She finished her Juniata playing career with then school record totals for assists all-time (4,525 - now third) and in a season (1,707 in 1987 - now third). She was the recipient of the school's Bargerstock Award as the most outstanding female athlete of her graduating class.
Aldo Bonomi '50
Football
A three-year letter winner as an offensive and defensive guard, he was named Juniata's most valuable lineman and earned All-Region honors as a senior. He was All-State at Aliquippa High School and lettered as a freshman at Edinboro University before transferring in 1947 to play for Bill Smaltz. After graduation, he was a standout in football during inter-service play while in the Army at Fort Lee. He then became a well-known football coach and administrator in western Pennsylvania, beginning as an assistant at Hopewell High School in 1952. As an assistant at Aliquippa from 1954-59, his team won the 1955 WPIAL championship and he was line coach of NFL Hall of Famer Mike Ditka. He was the head football coach and athletic director at Monaca from 1959-1964 before becoming a principal and superintendent in eastern Pennsylvania until his retirement in 1989. He was inducted into the Aliquippa Sports Hall of Fame in 1983.
Lou Eckerl '74
Baseball, Football
A four-year letter winner in both sports, he was a senior tri-captain and the Middle Atlantic Conference MVP in 1973 when Juniata went 10-2, played in the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl and finished as NCAA Division III football runner-up. A running back, he was the team's leading rusher and scorer in the regular season and received the Engle Award as the most valuable back in 1973. He remains in the school's top 10 for single-season rushing yards (763 in 1973) and career rushing yards (1,431). He was also a stand out pitcher and outfielder in baseball, serving as captain his senior year. Currently athletic director and football coach at Calvert Hall College High School in Maryland, he also served as AD and baseball coach at Cardinal Gibbons where his 1982 diamond squad was ranked #1 in the state of Maryland earning him Coach of the Year honors.
Bill Germann '49
Baseball, Athletic Trainer, Coach
A baseball third baseman as an undergraduate, he went on to serve his alma mater as athletic trainer from 1949-79 and golf coach from 1954-79. He was a fixture as the trainer on College Hill - working for three presidents, five athletic directors, six head football coaches and six basketball coaches during his tenure. As golf coach, his team won the Middle Atlantic Conference championship in his first season. His teams went on to log 12 winning seasons and two .500 campaigns, including an undefeated effort (9-0-1) in 1972 when the team lost the MAC title by one stroke. He retired with a career coaching mark of 117-125-1. The full-time manager of local radio station WHUN for many years, he was honored at his Juniata retirement for well over 31 years of service to students as a trainer, coach and friend.
Cathy (Miller) Gilkey '88
Volleybal
A four-year letter winner as a middle hitter, she earned first team All-America and third team Academic All-America honors as a senior. She was All-Middle Atlantic Conference, All-East and the Juniata MVP in both 1986 and 1987. Still the single season record holder for hitting percentage and total blocks (209 in 1987), she remains in the Juniata top five for career blocks, aces, kills and attacks. Juniata won four straight conference championships and advanced to the national semifinals three times (1985-87) during her playing career. A Cambria Heights High School grad, she is now head girls volleyball coach at nearby Central Cambria. She was awarded Juniata's prestigious Blood Award as the senior student-athlete graduating with the highest cumulative grade point average.
Susan Grubb '88
Basketball
One of only two women (joining Nancy Zinkham) in the Juniata top 10 for career scoring, rebounding, steals, blocked shots and assists, she holds all-time marks for steals (292) and blocks (182). She is second for rebounds (941), fourth in scoring (1,1,41) and seventh in assists (177). The team captain and MVP, and the Middle Atlantic Conference Northwest Section Player of the Year in 1987-88, she was also All-MAC as a junior. She led the team in rebounding in each of her four campaigns - three of those totals remain in the school's top 10 - and was the leading Juniata scorer for a season twice. She still holds the Juniata record for blocks in a season (66). She recently was a member of the St. Croix All-Island women's volleyball team in 1992-93.
Stuart Jackson '77
Football
A four-year letter winner on the defensive line and starter as a freshman for Juniata's 1973 Stagg Bowl team, "Stu" was named to the Middle Atlantic Conference Northern Division first team all-stars after his sophomore and junior seasons. As a junior, he was named to the ECAC first team and was the conference MVP. As a senior tri-captain and preseason All-America pick, he went on to earn MAC North honorable mention at nose guard and was again named an ECAC first team all-star. He led the team in total tackles in 1975 and 1976. Also a standout at nearby Huntingdon High School, he earned several ECAC Weekly All-East honors during his collegiate career and was honorable mention AP All-State as a sophomore.
Nancy (Harden) Latimore
Coach, Administrator
The most successful women's basketball coach in Juniata history with a 101-80 mark from 1978-86, she led her 1979-80 squad to a 24-4 record and a trip to the AIAW national quarterfinals. Her final squad went 16-6 in 1985-86, reaching the NCAA regionals and earning her WBCA District Coach of the Year honors for the second straight year. Juniata field hockey teams posted 35 wins in her nine seasons as head coach while the women's tennis program boasted the school's first national qualifier in 1983. Assistant AD at Juniata from 1982-86, she served as director of championships for the NCAA from 1986-91 before becoming associate director of athletics at Clarion University from 1991-95. A four-sport performer at Huntingdon High School, she went on to earn three varsity letters in both basketball and tennis at West Chester University where she also played field hockey. She is currently the director of athletics and physical education at Elizabethtown College.
John Staley '57
Football, Baseball, Golf, Tennis, Boxing, Basketball
A co-captain in football, baseball and golf as a senior, he was a stand out on the school's first three undefeated football teams and played the entire game during the 1956 Tangerine Bowl. The team MVP on the line in 1956, he also received All-State, All-East and Little All-America honors. A native of Natrona Heights in western Pennsylvania, he earned 14 collegiate letters and was clearly one of the most versatile athletes in Juniata history. He was a Dapper Dan Golden Gloves finalist in 1953, light heavyweight Altoona section champ in 1956 and a heavyweight section finalist in 1957. He played semi-pro football from 1958-62 and recreational league baseball and basketball until age 45. The 1969 Dapper Dan Man of the Year, he was elected to the Allegheny-Kiski Valley Sports Hall of Fame in 1982 and was nominated for the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame in 1988.
Bob Waggoner '73
Football
A four-year starter and letter winner at linebacker, he is one of only three Juniata players to earn first team All-Middle Atlantic Conference honors at the same position three consecutive years (1970-72). A tri-captain as a senior, he received honorable mention All-ECAC in 1971 and 1972 and honorable mention All-State in 1971. He officiated high school football in the state of Ohio for 22 years and officiated Division III and Division I college football for 12 years, including working regularly in the Ohio Athletic Conference, the North Coast Conference and the major college Mid-American Conference. He officiated the USC at Notre Dame game in 1996 when he later worked the Las Vegas Bowl. Presently a field judge in the National Football League, he began officiating for the NFL in 1997.
George Weaver '38
Basketball, Football, Coach
A graduate of nearby Huntingdon Area High School, he was a stand out in both football and basketball at HAHS and at Juniata. He went on to become one of the best known and most successful high school coaches in Pennsylvania, compiling over 700 victories in four different sports - football, basketball, baseball and track - while coaching some 37 years until his retirement from Huntingdon in 1976. His grid teams at Wyoming Memorial High School and Huntingdon combined for a 136-80-14 mark in 24 seasons. Huntingdon went 10-0 in 1955 when he earned Central Counties Coach of the Year honors. In 30 years, his basketball teams were 448-229, including winning records in 21-of-24 seasons at Huntingdon with six Mountain League titles and one District Six crown. He was elected to the Pennsylvania Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1990 and was inducted in June 1998 as a charter member of the Huntingdon County Sports Hall of Fame. He died on August 28, 1998, at the age of 84.
