William Haushalter '57
Football
He was a four-year letter winner on the Juniata football team, Haushalter earned Honorable Mention Little All-America honors as a senior. Along with fellow hall of famer Pat Tarquinio, he was named the team's most valuable back on the 1955 team that went to the Tangerine Bowl and tied Missouri Valley State, 6-6. During his four years on the gridiron, Juniata posted a record of 29-2-1, with the two losses coming during his freshman campaign.
Haushalter began his teaching and coaching career as an assistant for two years at Tyrone High School. He was head coach at Saxton-Liberty High School and later Tussey Mountain High School, leading his 1961 squad to an undefeated 9-0 record and a Western Conference Class A Championship. Haushalter had a four-year mark of 20-15-1 on the Broad Top, before moving on to become head coach at Philipsburg-Osceola High School where he compiled a four-year record of 23-12-5. During his time at Philipsburg, he acted as a director of the Pennsylvania State Football Coaches Association.
Haushalter’s coaching career continued at Lafayette College from 1966-72, then at the United States Naval Academy from 1973-86 on the staff of George Welsh. During his time at Navy, he mentored nine of the top 10 rushers in Navy football history, including All-American and College Football Hall of Famer Napoleon McCallum, and helped guide the Midshipmen to appearances in the Holiday, Garden State, and Liberty bowls.
Haushalter was inducted in the Pennsylvania Scholastic Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1994, and the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame in 1998.
Renee Rine '92
Field Hockey
Renee ranks as one of the top offensive players in the history of the Juniata field hockey program. The four-year letter winner completed her career with 39 goals, tying Juniata Sports Hall of Famer Kathleen McGowan ’90 for the school record that stood until the 2006 season. Her 86 career points was one shy of the school record at the time.
Rine earned First Team All-Middle Atlantic Conference honors as a senior, when the Juniata captain finished with 12 goals and 27 points. Her most productive season was as a junior, when she found the back of the cage 14 times while leading Juniata to an appearance in the 1990 MAC Tournament, and a 12th in the nation ranking in the NCAA Division III poll.
Over her four year career, Rine helped lead Juniata to a 37-17-4 record, which ranks as one of the most successful four-year spans in Juniata field hockey annals.
Chris Fazio '97
Men's Volleyball
One of the top players in the history of the men's volleyball program, Chris Fazio ’97 earned Volleyball Magazine Division III Player of the Year honors in 1997. He was a three-time selection to Volleyball Magazine’s Small School/Division III All-America teams, after becoming the first Juniata player to garner All-America honors in 1995. Fazio also earned All-EIVA honors three times during his career, including twice receiving First Team All-EIVA recognition; at the time of his induction, he was one of only three Juniata men’s volleyball players who were three-time All-EIVA honorees. Fazio was also selected to the EIVA Division III All-Tournament Team and the Molten Division III All-Tournament squad during his career, and was a three-time Juniata team most valuable player.
Fazio finished his career with a record-setting 418 blocks, and his 1,634 kills were just 28 shy of the then-school record. He concluded his senior campaign with 545 kills and 148 blocks – both the second-highest single season totals in those categories at the time of his induction – and he was honored with the College’s annual Smaltz Award. Following graduation, he played professional volleyball in Austria in 1999 and 2000.
Fazio was inducted into the Pennsylvania Volleyball Hall of Fame in 2003, and the North Allegheny High School Sports Hall of Fame in 2004.
Amy Gladfelter '97
Track and Field
is one of only two Juniata track and field athletes to earn All-America recognition twice in their career; she placed seventh in the javelin at the NCAA Championship to earn All-America honors during her junior season. She then finished fifth in the same event at the NCAA Championship as senior to repeat as an All-American. Gladfelter established the Juniata record in the event as a senior when she posted a best throw of 142' 3", a record that still stood 10 years after it was established. She broke the previous record by nearly 10 feet. In addition, her toss at the MAC Championship was the second-best throw in Division III leading up to the NCAAs.
Gladfelter was a two-time Middle Atlantic Conference Champion in the javelin, winning the competition at the conference championships as both a junior and a senior. Her efforts in her senior season helped Juniata finish fourth at the MAC Championship, its highest finish since the 1983 season.
Charles Pollock
Administrator and Friend
Charles Pollock served as Juniata’s Sports Information Director from 1974 to 1981, a period that saw the birth of women’s varsity athletics at Juniata College and significant evolution in the men’s athletics program. He won over 20 awards for his media and recruitment publications from the College Sports Information Director of America (CoSIDA), including “Best in the Nation” honors for his football, basketball, cross country, and women’s volleyball brochures. Pollock’s work on organizing Juniata’s athletic archives, continuing the efforts begun by fellow hall of famer Bill Engel, has proven invaluable to successive Juniata coaches and athletic administrators.
Pollock went on become Director of Public Relations at Ohio Wesleyan (1981-86) and Allegheny College (1986-98). He returned to his alma mater, Bucknell University, in 1999 as Vice President for Student Affairs, where his duties included oversight of the Bucknell athletic department. Bucknell won the Patriot League President’s Cup six times during Pollock’s seven years supervising Bison athletics. Since 2006, Pollock has served as Bucknell’s Vice President for External Relations.
