Juniata women's tennis upset by Goucher, 5-4, in Landmark tourney semifinals

HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- Juniata College's post-season run came to an end with a 5-4 upset loss to Goucher College, in Wednesday's semifinal match in the 2009 Landmark Conference Women's Tennis Tournament.
Third-seeded Goucher (13-4) opened with wins in two of the three doubles matches. The Gophers then held second-seeded Juniata (13-6) at bay by splitting the six singles matches.
Amanda Fontana (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Trinity) and Katie Healy (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) had the lone doubles win, with their 8-0 victory at no. 1 doubles over Goucher's Tanya Cooley and Carly Heinz.
Healy also garnered one of Juniata's three singles wins, with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 win at no. 2 singles over Heinz.
Juniata freshman Jenny Wang (Huntingdon, Pa./Huntingdon Area) posted a 6-4, 6-1 decision over Joan Pulupa at no. 4 singles. Junior Lauren Perow (Huntingdon, Pa./Huntingdon Area) had the Eagles' final win, a 7-5, 5-7, 11-9 triumph over Mara Bergman at no. 6 singles, recovering from an 8-3 deficit in the tiebreaker set.
"Lauren developed some match maturity today, and really had a great effort to come back and win that match," said Juniata head coach Beth Bleil.
Fontana dropped a 6-3, 6-1 decision to Cooley at no. 1 singles, while junior Maggie Wolenter (Audubon, N.J./Audubon) was defeated 7-5 (7-4), 6-0 at no. 3 singles by the Gophers' Mouna Attarha. Goucher's Chloe Scott-Giry had the Gophers' final singles point with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Caroline Weisser (York, Pa./York Suburban) at no. 5 singles.
Wolenter and Weisser dropped an 8-5 verdict to Scott-Giry and Pulupa at no. 2 doubles, while Goucher's Bergman and Attarha posted an 8-4 win over Wang and Perow at no. 3 doubles.
Juniata concludes its season on Thursday afternoon, as the Eagles host archrival Elizabethtown College at 3:30 p.m. on the Raffensperger Tennis Courts.
