Benefits to Both Chemists and Non-chemists
For chemists, we postpone some of the more esoteric synthetic topics until Junior year, when the fundamentals of organic chemistry have had plenty of time to sink in.
For non-chemists, we spare them from this material altogether, replacing it with material they can use far more directly. Systems such as carbohydrates, nucleic acids, and proteins are integrated directly into the mainstream development rather than relegated to a brief consideration at the end. Most important, all the course material is tied together by a common thread, so the disjointedness of most freshman courses is removed.
