Highlights of Achievements During the 2007-2008 Academic Year

Beaver, Joshua, a junior pre-medical student, will be participating in a 12-week chemistry research internship at Carnegie Mellon University during the summer of 2008. Joshua will be studying semi-conducting polymers for use in solar cells.

Brenzier, Danielle, a sophomore pre-dental medicine student, will be doing a 10-week research project with Dr. Randy Bennett, Professor of Biology at Juniata College, during the summer of 2008. The project title is: "Analysis of eye morphology and development in local populations of Gammarus minus (freshwater amphipod).

Nicholas Cimino, a junior pre-medical student, won the Pennsylvania Technical Intern Student of the Year Award. His internship experience took place at John Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland during the summers of 2006 and 2007.

Dahl, Alicia, a freshman pre-medical student, shadowed Dr. Marc Abbat, a dermatologist, at the University of Delaware and Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Jersey during the summer of 2007.

Donley, Patrick; Daniels, Tyson; Harborg, Eva, a junior and two seniors; officers of Juniata College's John B. Shuster Memorial Emergency Medical Services, attended the National Collegiate Emergency Medical Services Foundation conference and were honored for reaching their 10th year anniversary.

Draper, Lindsey, a sophomore pre-medical student, worked in medical clinics in impoverished neighborhoods in San Jose, Costa Rica and Changuiola, Panama through the International Service Learning Organization during winter break, 2007-08. Lindsey is also a member of a student team that won first place for their Community Awareness Project on Diabetes at the HOSA State Leadership Conference on April 9 and 10, 2008. She was also named the Vanderbilt Summer Scholar for 2008 and will be working in the laboratory of Dr. Steven McElroy '95.

Gamber, Ashli, a senior pre-medical student, completed a volunteer internship at the Hershey Medical Center during the summer of 2007, shadowed a family physician, and volunteered at the Ronald McDonald House.

Hess, Bryan, a junior pre-medical student, completed a summer internship during the summer of 2007 at the York Hospital in the pediatric unit with Dr. David Turkewitz, Head of Pediatrics at York Hospital and President of the Pennsylvania Pediatric Association. Bryan and Dr. Turkewitz gave a presenation on immunizations for the Pennsylvania Pedatric Association.

Hull, Travis, a junior pre-medical student, attended the Allegheny Branch of the American Society for Microbiology and won first place for an oral presentation of his research. Travis will be attending the American (ASM) General Meeting in Boston from June 1-5, 2008 to present his research in the form of an oral presenation and poster. His attendance will be funded by ASM Undergraduate Research Fellowship due to his conducting research at Juniata College during the summer of 2007. Travis received fellowship awards from both the American Physiological Society and the American Heart Association for the biomedical research he will be conducting with Dr. Gregory Stahl '84 at Harvard Medical School this summer. Travis is also a member of a student team that won first place for their Community Awareness Project on Diabetes at the HOSA State Leadership Conference on April 9 and 10, 2008.

Kanar, Brent, a senior pre-dental medicine student, has been awarded the Dean's Scholarship from the University of Pitsburgh School of Dental Medicine. The scholarship is awarded to two students in every entering dental class.

Karkoska, Kristine,a sophomore pre-medical student, received a summer research internship from The Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio. She will work in the Department of Pediatrics and Genetics during the summer of 2008.

Kwon, Aggie, a junior pre-medical student, is a member of a student team that won first place for their Community Awareness Project on Diabetes at the HOSA State Leadership Conference on April 9 and 10, 2008

Mathews, Melinda, a sophomore pre-pharmacy student, shadowed at Kopp Drug every other Wednesday during the spring semester, 2008.

McClennen, Evan, graduate of the class of 2007, worked with Dr. Nicholas Bower '00 at his clinic in Duran, Ecuador in February, 2008. Dr. Bower is the founder and supporter of the organization Physicians for Humanity.

Murray, Kristen, a junior pre-medical student, did an internship at Nason Hospital dong phlebotomy, assisting with autopsies and doing research on Group B Strep Infection in infants during the summer of 2007. Kristen will be working at the Nason Hospital during the summer of 2008.

Norton, Lindsay, a sophomore pre-medical student, is a member of a student team that won first place for their Community Awareness Project on Diabetes at the HOSA State Leadership Conference on April 9 and 10, 2008

Reed, Daniel, a sophomore pre-medical student, received a summer research fellowship from the University of Massachusetts Medical School for the summer of 2008. Daniel was also chosen to represent Juniata College at the Pennsylvania State University Medical School (Hershey) to participate in the Primary Care Scholars program.

John Bulger, D.O. '91 was named to the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine Board as a Commonwealth Representative by the President Pro Tempore. John is also a Regional Dean at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and Director of Osteopathic Medical Education at Geisinger Health System, where he established a winter break Jan Plan and a summer intership for Juniata students.

Terry McIntosh Eccles, M.D. '92 set up a summer internship program for a Juniata student at her rural pediatrics practice in Stafford Springs, Connecticut.

Catherine Hoyt '07 is in the Doctoral Program in Occupational Therapy at Washington University in St. Louis, which was ranked #1 this year by US News and World Report. Catherine was elected to the honor society and formed a conversation partners program for international graduate students. She will be doing research on the effects of parental education on the development of children with sickle cell anemia.

Michael Klag, M.D., M.P.H. '74, Dean of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, received an Honoroary Doctorate from the College on May 10, 2008.

Swindell, Kim, M.D. '97, was awarded the "Douglas S. Moodie Award for Outstanding Research" on May 21, 2008 by the Institue of Pediatrics at Cleveland Clinic. Dr. Swindell is currently completing a fellowship in Pediatric Infectious Diseases.

Thomas Terndrup, M.D. '77, an emergency medicine physician, has been awarded the 2008 Health Professions Alumni Appreciation Award for establishing a Juniata Summer Research Scholar position at the Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine.

Highlights of Achievements During the 2006-2007 Academic Year

Tanner Bartholow, a senior premedical student, was awarded a $2,000 scholarship by The Pennsylvania Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) Foundation, Inc. This awarded is given to only 30 outstanding students across Pennsylvania.

Lindsey Draper, a freshman premedical student, will be interning this summer at the National Cancer Institute at Fort Detrick, MD, in the laboratory of Dr. Hou, working with Drosophila and mice as models for studying stem cells.

Ted Eckman, a junior premedical student, was named our Harvard Summer Scholar for 2007 and will be working in the laboratory of alumnus Dr. Greg Stahl. In addition, Ted received national recognition as an American Physiological Society Summer Undergraduate Research Fellow for this upcoming work.

Heather Ferlitch, a sophomore premedical student, was selected to participate in the McNair Scholars Summer Research Program at the University of North Texas Health Science Center in Fort Worth.

Michael Johnson, a senior premedical student, received first place out of 55 students in the McNair Scholars Biomedical Research Program at the University of North Texas Health Science Center this past summer for both his class work and research presentation. He was also selected to present his research paper in November at the 2006 Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students in Anaheim, California.

Ashli Gamber, a junior premedical student, and Aggie Kwon, a sophomore premedical student, were accepted to the competitive Primary Care Scholars' Program at the Penn State University College of Medicine in Hershey.

Kelly McLin, a sophomore premedical student, was named our Vanderbilt Summer Scholar for 2007 and will be working in the laboratory of alumnus Dr. Steven McElroy.

Daniel Reed, a freshman premedical student, was accepted to the Summer Medical and Dental Education Program at the University of Virginia

2006-2007 Health Professions Faculty Achievements and Activities

David Hutto, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of English, led a workshop on Improvement in Medical Writing at the American Medical Writers Association Conference in Albuquerque, New Mexico, in October.

Debra Kirchhof-Glazier, Ph.D., attended a meeting of the Philadelphia Local Area Network of the Northeast Association of Advisors for the Health Professions at Drexel University College of Medicine in January.

2006-2007 Alumni Achievements and Activities

Three of the four awards given to first year students for undergraduate achievement at the fall convocation and awards ceremony at the Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine at Hershey were received by Juniata alumni Brandon Dearman '05, Kelly Laraway '06, and Bryan Tokarchic '06..

Robin Koval '04 a third year student at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey School of Osteopathic Medicine, won the UMDNJ-SOM Alumni Book Award for achieving the highest average in her class. Robin is also the Vice President of the class of 2008 and was appointed to the Admissions Committee.

Kimberly Manspeaker Miller '92 was named President and CEO of Beaver Dam Community Hospital in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin in December, 2006.

Dr. Bradley Miller '94 was appointed Associate Medical Director and Program Director of the Osteopathic Family Medicine Residency Program at Susquehanna Health System in Williamsport, PA. The residency program, in its 30th year, has expanded its curriculum and accreditation to include osteopathic training, and Dr. Miller will be responsible for developing and administering the program.

Robert Neumar, M.D.'85 was cited in the July 23, 2007 issue of Newsweek as "a brilliant young neuroscientist." The name of the article is "Back From the Dead."

Alexander Rinehart '06 was the recipient of the Biofreeze Scholarship Award at the New York Chiropractic College, where he began matriculation in January 2007.

Thomas Terndrup, M.D. '77 was named Chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine at the Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, Penn State College of Medicine, effective November 1, 2006. He will also assume the position of Associate Dean for Clinical Research at the College of Medicine.

Junior premedical student Tanner Bartholow received the prestigious American Physiological Society Undergraduate Research Fellowship for his work this upcoming summer in the laboratory of Dr. Gregory Stahl at Brigham and Women’s Hospital of Harvard University. Vanderbilt Research Opportunity

Alumnus Dr. Steven McElroy (‘95), Instructor of Pediatrics in the Division of Neonatology at Vanderbilt University has established a summer research position in his laboratory exclusively for Juniata students. Junior premedical student Kory Dawson has been named the first Juniata College Vanderbilt Summer Research Scholar.

Health Professions Heroes Award Instituted

Dr. Eliot Fagley and Dr. Nicholas Bower are the first recipients of The Juniata College Health Professions Heroes Award, established by the Health Professions Committee this year to recognize current students, alumni, faculty, or health care practitioners associated with the College who make an outstanding contribution of service and sacrifice to society.

Nicholas Bower, D.O. ‘00 started Physicians for Humanity, a program of service in Ecuador, in which osteopathic medical students immerse themselves in the culture of a needy area to enhance their orientation to be of service in medicine. Health Professions Alumni Appreciation Award

Randy Kochel, M.D. ‘79, family practice physician from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, was named this year’s recipient for his outstanding contribution to educating our students about medicine and serving as a role model.

2005-2006 Student Achievements and Activities

Tanner Bartholow '07 received the American Physiological Society Undergraduate Research Fellowship American Physiological Society Undergraduate Research Fellowship Award for his work this upcoming summer in the laboratory of Dr. Gregory Stahl at Harvard Harvard Summer Research Scholars.

Amanda Cattoi ’07 and Evan McClennen ’09, two of our three applicants to the Hershey Medical School Primary Care Scholars Program, were accepted for this summer experience (they have not yet received notification). Hershey invites certain schools in PA to submit applications from their students, with a maximum of 3 applicants per school. Kory Dawson '07 was named the first participant in the Juniata College Vanderbilt Summer Scholar Program.

Catherine Hoyt '07 will be working at a speech therapy camp with Speech and Occupational therapists for children ages 3-7.

Michael Johnson '07 has been accepted to the McNair Summer Resarch Program at the University of North Tecas Health Science Center.

Felicia Kaas '09 - will be volunteering at Pottstown Memorial Medical Center in Pottstown, PA and will be shadowing a physician's assistant at Montgomery County Geriatric and Rehabilitation Center in Royersford, PA.

Brad Kissel '06 was one of 30 students in the state to receive a $1000 Scholarship from Pennsylvania HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America).

Joseph LaPrad '07 will be going to Quetzaltenango, Guatemala to participate in a medical delegation from the Stone Church. Joseph will be translating for American physicians and assist with the care of patients.

Andrea Nulton '06 - was awarded the Victor D. Organek Memorial Scholarship. This award is given to a child of an Altoona Regional employeee who is pursuing a degree in a health care related field.

Ryan Porter '07 who elected to apply and was accepted to our 3+3 affiliation with LECOM. Ryan will be participating in a pharmacy internship during the summer of 2006 and also working at the Ephrata Community Hospital.

Alexander Rinehart '07 attended the "10th Binennial Symposium on Minorities, the Medically Underserved and Cancer" on April 20, 2006 in Washington, DC. This event is sponsored by the Intercultural Cancer Council.

Meghan Ruffner '07 - will be volunteering at a Physical Therapy Rehabilitation Center.

Leigh Sassaman '08 attended the Penn State Primary Care Day on September 17, 2005 at the Penn State University College of Medicine.

Michael Vella '06 was awarded the Mallery/Devon Scholarship which is a $30,000/year scholarship from Blair County. Michael will matriculate to the University of Pennsylvania in the fall, 2006.

Amy Wade '08 - will be working at Vetcetera Pet Healthcare Center in Schuylkill Haven, PA.

Dr. Debra Kirchhof-Glazier, Director of the Program, was invited to give a workshop on Personal Statement Writing at the National Alpha Epsilon Delta Premedical Honor Society Conference in St. Louis on March 11th.

Susan LaVere, Assistant to the Program, was invited to join the NAAHP as an associate member and attended the National Conference of Health Professions Advisors in June, 2006 in Portland, Oregon.
