Juniata College will partner with Ibn Ghazi Arabic Institute in Fez, Morocco to provide a four-week study abroad opportunity for faculty members and K-12 school teachers from the rural central Pennsylvania region surrounding the College to strengthen area studies and language skills.

Travel and study in Morocco is funded through a Fulbright-Hays Group Project Abroad grant and made possible by the U.S. Department of Education International Education Programs Service.  

The overarching goal of the project, “North Africa: Memory, Conflict, Reconciliation, Renaissance,” is to develop an understanding of the cosmopolitan nature of the cultural history of North Africa and encompasses four specific objectives:

1. To develop and to disseminate effective learning strategies and interdisciplinary K-20 curriculum resources for understanding the complex cultural crossroads that inform the Arab World in collaboration with the Language in Motion program (LiM), the Consortium for Educational Resources on Islamic Studies (CERIS), and the Keystone Study Away Consortium (KSAC);

2. To foster collaboration and interdisciplinary cooperation at Juniata College across the academic disciplines of International Studies, Peace and Conflict Studies, World Languages, Social Sciences, and History with regard to course development of postcolonial topics and experiential learning initiatives in Africa;

3. To strengthen the understanding of the inseparability of the history of Western colonial enterprises on the contemporary culture of both Northern Africa and Western Europe; and

4. To encourage interest in developing Arabic language programs at the College and secondary school level through collaboration and innovative use of limited resources including long-standing experience with the Institute of International Education and placement of Foreign Language Teaching Assistants and the possibility of hosting through the Fulbright Less Commonly Taught Languages focus that includes Arabic.

The program will feature intensive Arabic-language instruction, accompanied by lectures, readings, and experiential learning opportunities on the history, cultural diversity, and contemporary concerns of the region of North Africa known as the Maghreb, with special emphasis placed on the role of Morocco within that geo-political context. The academic focus of the program will examine how the colonial and postcolonial encounters with sub-Saharan Africa, Europe, and the Middle East have influenced modern Morocco. Within that historical framework, participants will investigate whether the events of the Arab Spring of 2011, which fundamentally changed most of North Africa, are symptomatic of yet another period of internal and international conflict in the region, or if they are part of a wider cultural renaissance taking place on the entire African continent.

Pre-departure readings, seminars, and lectures will focus on the confluence of Spanish, French and Moroccan history as a lens for understanding the language, literature, social institutions, and cultural practices in contemporary Morocco. Participants will be required to write model lesson plans, design their own curricular modules, and to incorporate what they learn in existing or new courses dealing with African Studies, post-colonialism, and intercultural competency, as well as sharing their experience in a peer-reviewed event that will be open to the public.

The Department of Education Fulbright-Hays Group Project Abroad This program provides grants to support overseas projects in training, research, and curriculum development in modern foreign languages and area studies for teachers, students, and faculty engaged in a common endeavor. Projects may include short-term seminars, curriculum development, group research or study, or advanced intensive language programs.
